Review
Once again Nicole O'Dell tactfully dealt with a difficult subject. Witchcraft is something most people either don't believe exists or try to ignore. But it is very real and not something to be ignored or taken lightly. Nicole did a great job of showing just how easy it can be to get drawn into this evil practice and how hard it is to escape once you are trapped. Everything was well done, the plot, characters, and the message. I love how this author presents these hard to talk about subjects in a way that clearly depicts them but keeps it to a place where a more sightly younger audience can still read them. YA at its finest
By Betsy Ann St. Amant
WOW. I've been looking forward to this book for awhile and wasn't disappointed at all. Now I'm just disappointed the series is over!

I love that Nicole openly tells in the author notes of the novel about her own experience as a teen at Teen Challenge. Her experience there clearly rings true and sincere in her novels in a way that other authors couldn't even touch. Nicole KNOWS - and PRACTICES - what she's preaching here, and the best part about it is that it doesn't come off as preaching at all! I highly recommend any of Nicole's YA novels for the teen in your life.

*Disclaimer** This particular novel is hardcore. It's great on so many levels, but it's definitely not a light, fluffy read to hand to a teen to skim on their beach blanket this summer. This is serious content and should be treated as such. (the occult, spiritual warfare, demonic influences, suicide, death, etc.) I personally felt a little heavy at times while reading it, just relating to the character. Not to scare readers away, because I firmly believe teens SHOULD read this. It's just a bit of a catch 22, because while this book clearly presents what could happen and often does happen when teens (or anyone) dabbles in the occult, and serves as a warning thereof and offers light to escape the darkness, it could also have the reverse affect and entice a spiritually scoffing teen to try things out or "give them ideas" if they don't take it seriously. I'm so glad Nicole included Scripture and the Plan of Salvation and prayer in the back of the book. Awesome!

I'm so proud of Nicole for tackling subject matter most authors would shy away from (and sadly, most preachers do as well in the church today) This is subject matter that should NEVER be ignored. Because it's real and its happening in teens' lives today - adults looking the other way is as good as pushing our teens into the darkness. Unacceptable!

So please pray over your teen before, during and after they read this story, and discuss it with them and get their thoughts on the subject matter. I believe God can and will use this story to do big things in the hearts of teenagers!

A powerful book dealing with the occult
By J:-)mi
"Ghostlike memories haunted her around every corner. She darted in and out of rooms, before the bells rang or after classes started so she could avoid Austin. A spirit wolf followed at her hells most of the day. Was this her life, or was she acting in some twisted made-for-cable movie? Escape."
------------------
Genre: Realistic/Supernatural fiction
Target Audience: Girls 16-20
Subjects: Occult, Suicide, Depression, Death
Summary: Melanie is dead. Doesn't even "cast a shadow" anymore as she shouted to her dad. With her death comes Joy's death it seems. She barely eats anything anymore. She barely smiles. She barely functions. Melanie was her best friend! It shouldn't have happened this way! It wasn't worth it! He wasn't worth it! Joy would have given up her boyfriend in an instant if it meant keeping her best friend alive. But it's too late. So now Joy has to find a way to cope. Nice "chuchry" sounding answers aren't doing it for her. She needs serious hope, and now! So when a friend introduces her to ojjua boards and Melanie speaks to her, Joy is hooked. At last she's found a way to get peace again and not have to be so afraid all the time. Or has she?
Notes: This is the third book in the Diamond Estates novels, a series about a kind of rehab and healing center for teen girls. Each book takes a young girl with a serious problem and shows how only through finding Jesus and getting support and making changes in their life, can they find the healing they so desperately need. In this one, a girl has just had her best friend commit suicide over her guilt for pursuing Joy's boyfriend. Desperate for answers, she turns to the occult, getting deeper and deeper into it. She receives a "spirit guide" who goes everywhere with her, to protect her from her fear. She soon realizes that the occult is a very dangerous thing and that the forces of evil will stop at nothing to control you once you have given them power. This is not a good book for a younger teen. The main character actually witnesses the forces of evil killing a person, convincing her for a time that they are more powerful than God. The workers at Diamond Estates explain that they are protected due to their salvation, but that Joy is not, nor was the person whose death she witnesses. It has a few scenes that are very disturbing. However, I recommend it for any who are old enough and mature enough emotionally to start learning about the struggle between God and the powers of evil. It's a good series for someone who needs to see a realistic portrayal of the struggles a teen girl faces and where hope can come from.
Spiritual Content Recommendation Scale: 5/5
~ J:-)mi
------------------
Ephesians 6:11-17 - Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Shadowed Onyx tackles tough issues with thought!

The Shadowed Onyx
~ A Diamond Estates Novel ~
By Nicole O'Dell

When 17 year old Joy Christianson's BFF Melanie commits suicide, Joy's life spirals out of control. When Joy is betrayed by her best friend and her boyfriend, she is hurt. But a life-long friendship is worth more than a boyfriend, so hours later Joy seeks out Melanie only to discover her friend has ended her life because of remorse.

As Joy struggles to come to terms with Melanie's death she begins dabbling various aspects of occultism and witchcraft. As Joy goes against her beliefs in her attempts to contact Melanie her friends and family are left wondering what happened to the once happy joyful young woman.

But as Joy goes further into the spiritual as searches for peace she takes a spirit guide who may cost her her very soul and lead her down the same path as Melanie. Diamond Estates is Joy's last hope but only is she can admit the danger she is in and will call upon the Lord.

Whenever Joy tries to turn from the path she is on something happens that convinces her that she will never escape. Death is following her every move, can she embrace the gift of eternal life that is before her?

The Shadowed Onyx deals with the issue of suicide in a thoughtful way and it looks at the ramifications on those that are left to deal with the loss. This title also looks at the powerful draw Satanic worship has on those who are searching for answers. But most important is the power of the cross and sincere heartfelt prayer of both the seeker and the believer.

The Shadowed Onyx would be an excellent addition to any library and an excellent conversation starter between parents and children when dealing with these sensitive issues.

I was provided a copy of this title by the publisher for the purpose of this review.

Stoicism (Ancient Philosophies), by John Sellars

One of the most popular of the Hellenistic schools of philosophy in antiquity, Stoicism flourished for some five hundred years and has remained a constant presence throughout the history of Western philosophy. Its doctrines appealed to people from all strata of ancient society-from the slave Epictetus to the emperor Marcus Aurelius. This book provides a lucid, comprehensive introduction to this great philosophical school. It gives an overview of the history of the school, covers its philosophy as a system, and explores the three main branches of Stoic theory. John Sellars includes historical information on the life and works of the ancient Stoic philosophers and summaries, analyses, and appraisals of their principal doctrines in logic, physics, and ethics. He also includes a fascinating account of the Stoic legacy from later antiquity to the present. The volume includes a glossary and chronology, which, together with its accessible yet authoritative approach, makes it the ideal choice for students, scholars, and general readers interested in what Stoicism has meant, both philosophically and historically, for western civilization.

"If readers are interested in Stoicism and want a solid, thoughtful introduction, then this is the book to read."--"Dialogue"

From the Inside Flap
"Stoicism needs a new work of this kind. Sellars not only takes good account of the last thirty years of research, he also has much of his own to contribute. I particularly applaud his focus on Epictetus and on Stoicism as an art of life. "—A.A. Long, author of Stoic Studies

Excellent introduction.
By David Marshall
Who were the Stoics? How did they understand philosophy? How did their ideas of "ethics," "physics" (including what we call "metaphysics" as well as science), and "logic" (also much broader than what Mr. Spock engages in) join together into an organic whole? What role did the sage play in the Stoic system -- if such a creature were even possible. (Stoic agnosticism on this point was very similiar to that of the early Confucians about a "sheng ren," BTW.)

Sellars begins by giving an overall answer to these questions. Then he describes the three Stoic categories -- physics, logic, and ethics -- in the following chapters. He finishes the book with a chapter on the "Stoic legacy" -- the influence they have had since their gradual disappearance in the 4th and 5th Centuries. (One surprise: John Calvin was sympathetic to the Stoics in an early writing -- I've read his commentary on Acts 17, in which Paul discusses the Christian faith with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers in Athens, and he didn't seem so open-minded there -- perhaps because he was jousting at "Papist" shadows. But Sellars spreads his comments out through the centuries -- this section is very succinct, but interesting.)

I wanted a good general introduction to Stoicism, before reading (as I plan to) more of the primary and secondary material. This book turned out to be great for that purpose. It's simple, fairly straightforward, though Sellars also interacts in a light way with the scholarship, and does an excellent job of "mapping out" key figures and questions. Sellars is objective, seldom intruding his own views on the discussion, but (in general) describing what is understood about the Stoics, and clearly marking out where opinions differ. All in all, an excellent introduction to an interesting school of thinkers.

One of several things that piqued my curiosity, was the dissonance between the tone of Cleanthes' Hymn to Zeus, and the role "God" plays in abstract Stoic philosophy. Sellars doesn't pick up on this, but the contradictions in Stoic philosophy seem as interesting to me as the continuity.

Stoicism hits the mark.
By J.D. Sharpless
The traditional caricature that portray Stoic philosophers as stone faced, unemotional, and indifferent thinkers "does not tell the whole story" according to John Sellars' recent book, Stoicism. Some fifteen hundred years since Stoicism fell into antiquity, it is fair to say its influence is very much part of the western mind to this day. The book is presented as an introduction for students and general audiences alike in an accessible way and has some reasonable depth that will challenge novice readers. Sellers acknowledges the limits of this introduction, but presents a well organized overview of the history and what Epictetus called topoi or areas of study.

It begins with a brief history of Stoic philosophy, beginning with Zeno in 330B.C.E. and ending with Simplicius in 529C.E. Although many Stoic texts were lost to history, as noted by the author, we have lengthy works from Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius and are able to glean important information and understanding from critics of Stoicism like the well-known skeptic Sextus Empiricus. I found the authors observation that the nature of Stoicism is itself partly responsible for its own decline interesting. According to Sellars, the Stoics where inspired by Socrates' focus on applying wisdom to living over theorizing which may have lent to less writing and more living the philosophy. He states, "For Epictetus, it is not the voluminous author Chrysippus who stands as his philosophical role model; rather it is Socrates, who expresses his philosophy in deed rather than words" (28). The Stoic ideal is of the sage who has the correct understanding of nature and lives in accordance with their nature.

From there we launch into the Stoic system: the three topos of Stoicism - logic, physics, and ethics. To the more ethics oriented readers, like myself, the feeling of dread looms over chapters titled logic or physics; expecting dry logical syllogisms and mathematical theorems that are barely intelligible. Fortunately, this is not the case; the author discusses Stoic logic and physics by providing basic but interesting summaries, and explains the important points and arguments. In addition, we learn the Stoic philosophy of language, ontology, cosmology, theology, epistemology, and psychology. We learn of "assertables" and "sayables," but what was most interesting in these chapters is the Stoics view of interconnectedness of nature and its inhabitants, what Sellars calls "cosmobiology" and today is discussed as the Gaia hypothesis, nature is conscious. Stoic logic and physics are part of a complex system and Sellars clearly presents the arguments, problems, and debates.
The final part of the Stoics topos is the ethical. From the logic and physics it follows that the core of human behavior is self-preservation, but a preservation of not merely our biology. Our rational-self that is most important because it is in the rational we find virtue. The Stoic's breakdown impressions, feelings, and emotions and argue we give "assent" to certain impressions and deny others; there are things that are "up to us" and "not up to us." The most interesting is the inward looking Stoics distinction between virtue and happiness. The commonly held view is to be happy is to get what you want, but the Stoics disagree and argue that to be happy requires virtue, which they understand as a healthy soul or disposition - "something choice-worthy for its own sake" (124). Sellars gives an interesting and solid discussion about Stoic ethics and their political cosmopolitanism.

The final section gives a brief look at the influence of Stoicism in Western philosophy. Important thinkers like Spinoza (perhaps the closest to Stoics), Kant, Nietzsche, Marx, Russell, Foucault, and Deleuze, to name a few, discusses Stoicism. For some, Stoics are a beacon while for others they are misguided or just wrong. Stoic philosophy has come in and out of fashion over the centuries perhaps due to its enigmatic nature, for it is persuasive, paradoxical, and problematic all at the same time. Sellars book brings this to light in an excellent, informative introduction to this fascinating philosophical system. For those interested in continuing their study of Stoicism or more specific topoi, the author provides an excellent guide to readings including top scholars. I would say if readers are interested in Stoicism and want a solid, thoughtful introduction than this is the book to read.

Great overview
By Harrison Koehli
This is a great overview of Stoic philosophy. Sellars gives a short history of the main players in the first chapter, as well as a brief rundown of the influence of Stoicism on western thought up to the 20th century. The former is pretty standard, and the latter pretty dry, in my opinion, fine for presenting the legacy of Stoicism throughout the ages, but more of an anticlimax than anything. The chapters sandwiched in between, however, are where the gems are. Sellars devotes a chapter each to the three main facets of Stoic thought: logic, physics, and ethics. He describes the Stoic view on formal logic, language theory, epistemology; their materialist (yet panpsychic) ontology, based on the two active and passive principles (mind and matter, God and world); and their work on values, morality, and virtue. Sellars writes clearly and to the point, teasing apart the Stoics' arguments, presenting alternate interpretations, and fitting it all together into a comprehensive worldview, which was the Stoics' whole point. Personally, I was struck by how much Stoicism resembles postmodern philosophers like Alfred Whitehead and David Ray Griffin. While there are certainly differences, Stoicism seems like a premodern attempt to do exactly what Whitehead attempted: create a total, comprehensive, consistent worldview taking account of all facts available. With more facts available, Whitehead (and Griffin, who presents Whitehead perhaps clearer than Whitehead himself did) has the benefit of 2000 more years of thought and science behind him, but Sellars's Stoicism (****) does an excellent job of showing what Stoicism had going for it.

Mood Food: Nourishing Your God-Given Emotions, by Melvin W. Hanna

Angry. Afraid. Sad. Ashamed. For many people, the struggle with emotions is long lasting and deeply disturbing. When you feel negative emotions, how do you respond? In a culture where anxiety is an epidemic and there are myriad ways to numb our discomfort, are you often overwhelmed? Or do you simply check out? Truth is, Jesus longs to be present with us when we are in emotional distress. God never meant for his children to hide from their shame, pretend they're not angry, run away when they're scared, or anesthetize their sadness. Our emotions serve a purpose, by design! In his book, Mood Food, Dr. Melvin W. Hanna examines human emotions through a biblical lens and tells how to move on from fear to faith, sadness to comfort, shame to a new identity. "My wife and I found that many people, both young and old from many cultures, struggle with fears which keep them from entering into the fullness of life or doing the will of God. Still others wrestle with anger because of the injustice of the abuse they've suffered, or because they feel helpless to change an abusive situation. Their life experiences and emotional consequences differ, but there is a common theme. These people suffer emotional oppression, locked in an emotional prison from which they feel powerless to escape. I want to raise hope that there is a way out of this emotional prison. This way out does not involve a "quick fix," but instead involves learning a new way to live. In this book I present a case that achieving an ongoing relational connection with Jesus is the first step in a journey out of emotional bondage."-Author Melvin H. Hanna By gaining an understanding of our emotional makeup through a biblical perspective in Mood Food, Dr. Hanna reveals God's original design for human emotions. He shares proven, scripture-based strategies to transform your emotional life, redirect your emotions to move you into a deeper relationship with God, and help accomplish His purposes for your life. Complete with end-of-chapter reflection exercises, Mood Food is an ideal personal or group study.

Review
"...many Christians are overwhelmed and find their emotions painful or confusing, either because they misunderstand their emotions, or mishandle them. When they lose control of their emotions they feel stunted and fear that God has abandoned them. This is why Melvin Hanna's book, Mood Food, is a welcome resource in a time when there is much confusion about the role emotions play in the lives of Christian believers. The main themes of the book point us back to scripture and how we can use the spiritual discipline of learning to converse with Jesus about our emotional states and transform these emotions so that they help us to discover God's purpose for them." -Archibald D. Hart, Ph.D., FPPR. Senior Professor of Psychology and Dean Emeritus, Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California.

“In an age where a person's immature emotions are often sabotaging his success and relationships this is a very welcome and much needed work. Melvin Hanna writes out of a wealth of experience teaching students at the University of the Nations in many countries of the world.  He is greatly respected by students and his University colleagues.  This lucid, practical and helpful approach in developing emotional maturity is both refreshing and life changing.” – Dr. Bruce Thompson, International Dean Emeritus, College of Counseling and Health Care, University of the Nations

"How do we harness core emotions such as shame, fear, anger, and sadness to allow them to work for us rather than against us?  Dr. Hanna confronts this question with the rationality one would expect of a chemistry professor, but with the insight and compassion of a follower of Jesus Christ.  God created us with emotions for a purpose: to motivate us to glorify Him.  The new way of living that this book proposes is the life-long habit of conversing with Jesus about the emotions we feel in given situations and listening to His reply.

As I read this book I stopped to ponder Hanna’s advice.  What would my life have been like had I paused to ask God how to deal with emotional situations?  The answer came to me before the question was formed.  I think it will to all of Dr. Hanna’s readers.

I highly recommend this book as an outstanding guide to daily living."  -Keith M. McDonald  M.D., Author of A Time to Mourn , A Time to Dance, and Bristlecone Mountain

A quick read with profound insights!
By Beth E. Rimmer
So often I have been the victim of my emotions without understanding why and, more importantly, not knowing how to escape. This book provides solid, practical, and scripture based ways to deal with negative emotions. One of the messages that has stayed with me and helped me on numerous occasions is that I need to consciously invite Jesus in to the situation when I find myself in the throes of anger, fear, worry, etc. This simple but profound step has brought perspective and peace. Wish I had read it earlier in my life!

Reading this brief book about our ‘God given emotions’ reminded ...
By V. Cobbey
Reading this brief book about our ‘God given emotions’ reminded me of another small book: The Practice of the Presence of God, by Brother Lawrence. Brother Lawrence back in the 1600s shared in a few conversations and letters how he developed his habit of conversing with God continually. Mel Hanna in this 21st century shares with us how we can see our emotions “as a path to deeper intimacy with the triune God.” He also writes about conversations with Jesus. He writes both to those who feel overwhelmed by their emotions – and to those who may have denied or are out of touch with their emotions (as he says he was for many years.) His writing is based on Scripture and experience: years of study as well as teaching. I found it helpful and encouraging.

Insightful, readable, practical
By Lisa
This is an insightful and easy to read book on God's purpose for emotions. There are practical exercises throughout the book to aid personal revelation and growth. I found the chapter on fear particularly clear and practical. I wish that I had received more teaching on emotions earlier in my spiritual walk as I increasingly see how vital this is for Christian maturity. It would be excellent to work through and discuss with a church small group as each chapter is self-contained. It takes the focus to deep heart work rather than changing surface behaviour. I recommend this book to others who want to deepen their understanding in this area of emotional maturity and to journey towards wholeness.

Great old world witch hunt
By Greg D
Eben Hollow has a great old-world horror feel to it, with its quaint village set next to a gnarled forest of dread, inhabited by a mythical goat-man who preys on those who stray from the path. There is also a nasty witch who is intent on extending her rule. Meanwhile the townfolk must make a living and raise their families. The town hero is The Elkmaster, who has pit himself as a holy soldier against the evil denizens of the forest.

The atmosphere is great here, and there is the everpresent suspense of the devil always lurking close at hand. The grisly methods of the witch and her henchman are fairly graphic, but the table is set in a battle of good vs evil. So far, evil has the upper hand. Can the Elkmaster and the good people of Eben Hollow prevail? The characters are very enjoyable, and everything is perfect, down to the speech of the characters. A fun read, for sure, and I wished it were longer.

A very powerful and entertaining depiction of the "age old" theme of conflicting Good and Evil
By Andrea Dragan
Bravo. A very powerful and entertaining depiction of the "age old" theme of conflicting Good and Evil. The characters are complex and interact in a very interesting manner. Each character has a signifigant philosophy and energy that contributes to the overall story line and eventual outcome. The authors have successfully interwoven vivid background with energetic, sardonic and anectotal characters to reveal an interesting fabric with substance and encouragement for every real life challenge. This is a "must read". You will not be able to put this book down once you enter "The Village of Eben Hollow".

Review
"An Oriental Tom Jones." -- Newsweek

Liang Heng was born in 1954 in Changsha, a large city in Central China. His parents were intellectuals -- his father a reporter on a major provincial newspaper, his mother a ranking cadre in the local police. This is Liang Heng's own story of growing up in the turmoil of the Great Cultural Revolution. His story is unique, but at the same time it is in many ways typical of those millions of young Chinese who have been tested almost beyond endurance in recent years. In his words we hear an entire generation speaking.

"A poignant inside look at what happened to ordinary citizens when the movement that ousted Chiang Kaishek's totalitarianism turned against itself. Liang helps Americans understand the past that China's leaders must overcome to cope with the future."

-- The Chicago Sun-Times

"Three stories in one -- first, a graphic, I-was-there account of what it was like to grow up during the Cultural Revolution; second, a cliffhanger love story with a happy ending; and third, a poignant analysis of how Chinese people have tried and failed, and tried again, to break out of their past. Each of these accounts is worth reading on its own." -- The New York Review of Books

"A significant event in our understanding of China...compelling, detailed, and devastating."

A harrowing adventure of growing up in China 1954-80
By Chris
This book, by Liang Heng, apparently co-written by his wife Miss Shapiro, is a very quick read, one of those books with a well-flowing style to its prose and simplicity and power of its description. You don't want to put it down.

It is a story of how Liang Heng grew up as his family was torn apart by the ever changing and eratic policies enforce by the state of which Chariman Mao sat at the helm. He was probably about five when his mother was branded a rightist devationist. She had been encouraged to make criticisms of the party during the "Let one hundred flowers bloom" campaign and after honestly thinking it over, decided to criticize her bosses at the local police department for elitism and abuse of power. Of course, the Hundred Flowers campaign was eventually transformed into a rectification campaign. His mother was sent to the countryside, eventually being able to return once a month home to see her children and face the frenzied abuse of her husband, a very indocrinated, humorless, pious party member and journalist at the local state run paper. Liang's father for political safety eventaully got a new wife who, like the father, also had questionable associations and links with the old KMT regime. This new wife was posted as a school teacher in a far away city and due to bureaucratic restrictions on movement, they could not see each other for many years.

The most vivid parts of the book deal with the cultural revolution. Liang Feng as a zealous primary school student, initially lifted himself up at the beginning of this time by making cartoons of his teachers accusing them of being capitalist roader, bourgeois counterrevolutionaries, etc. But soon, his father got caught up in the trap because he was an intellectual, had briefly been part of a KMT group during the dark days of Chiang Kai Shek and the rapacious landlords before he was exposed to Maoism, and so on. Liang was branded a "stinking intellectual's son" and shunned and sometimes physically abused by his peers. His father was forced to go through many "struggle sessions" and paraded around town in a dunce cap.

The Cultural Revolution years are indeed described with the most simple and powerful indepth vivideness. The Cultural revolution for Liang had many harrowing adventures including his participation in mock long march and a stay in Peking to be part of a Red Guard group at a Musical conservatory during which period Liang caught a glimpse of Chairman Mao. Another episode deals with the armed combat of the rival "conservative" and "rebel" Red Guard groups and all sorts of splinter groups fighting for control of the city of Changsa, Liang's home town. Liang Heng gets caught in the middle of one battle and witnesses horrible death and destruction. He eventually joined a street gang made up of children of counterrevolutionaries and of communist china's lowest class, what Marx called the Lumpenproletariat. He spent some time being a cart pusher and custodian of a pig pen on a train, under the mentorship of the wise old migrant worker and street person Pockmarked Liu.

The climax of the book's vividness is probably when Liang Heng's father is transfered to the countryside for hard labor in a peasant commune. The particular commune where they are sent is in a very neglected area and the peasants very benighted. Liang's dad is assigned the duty of teaching Chairman Mao thought sessions to the peasants. Liang and his father are forced to live with a peasant and his wife, who have serious difficulty accomodating them. Unfortunately, Peking had launched another mass movement this time about elminating capitalist practices, and so the local leadership used the opportunity to harrass the peasants. The state gave this particular commune, in contrast to other areas, not much resources, and the peasants could only survive by raising revenue by selling produce from their livestock which was now being confiscated. During this episode, there are such notable incidents as Guo La Da' and the confiscation of his ducks. (...) The peasants in this commune seemed to be able to be more independent, beyond the reach of indoctrination if only because the government couldn't quite afford to put its tentacles into their remote area. Another incident deals with the hard suffering of Guo Lucky Wealth's wife, the wife of the peasant household they stayed in. She wanted to get pregnant but she had been manipulated into getting a birth control device put inside her. Guo Lucky Wealth's wife enlisted the services of a local witch doctor to make her fertile, but the witch doctor couldn't get quite the right potions.

After this point, the story loses some of its vividity as the events in his life are told more briefly. But it still is very interesting. By the early 70's, Liang Heng started to get some breaks, including being assigned a decent job at a factory to while he played for the factory's basketball team. He admits that though living standards on the whole improved(only slightly for all too many he claims) in China from the dark days of the KMT, he began to fully grasp that the cruelty, stratification and corruption in the economy and government in his society was quite different from the propaganda conception of what socialism was supposed to be. He tried to pursue girlfriends but his unfortunate political status ruined those relationship. Then he managed to get bribe his factory party officials and others to help him get accepted into college. This was after the lunacies of the Cultural revolution had died down and colleges were reoopened for competitive examination after the "Gang of Four" and their followers were purgedd after Mao's death. He eventually met Miss Shapiro who was working as a foreign language teacher at his college and fell in love with her. After college, his first postition was that of a school teacher and was dissapointed that though the post-Mao era was seemingly enacting great changes, the students he taught still exhibited the same inability to think critically that his generation had. The students still had alot of their time devoted to blindly memorizing the same silly Party slogans and being trained to worship the state, as Liang did as a youngster.

Simply told, poignant memoir of enormous events
By I. Westray
Son of the Revolution is a spare book, the sort of small biography you might pick up and read in a couple of days some weekend. It packs an enormous punch, though. Liang Heng, its author, experienced essentially every side of the cultural revolution in China, and his graceful, somewhat understated prose only acts as a sort of smooth surface to the roiling undercurrent of those huge events.
This book often gets assigned as a college-level textbook for History courses, and it's easy to see why. Liang Heng literally experienced almost everything about the cultural revolution first hand. In the course of the book, he lives both sides of almost any set of events you can think of. For example, as a young boy he's involved in a revolutionary group that's excitedly denouncing capitalist influences at its school. In a fit of enthusiasm, he draws a scathing poster of a favorite teacher. Almost immediately he feels tremendously guilty over the drawing. His father and he talk about the teacher's reaction, and Liang Heng goes to apologize. Then, just when the teacher's benevolence and the father's wisdom seem to have smoothed over this pang of overzealousness in the student, Liang Heng discovers that his father, too, has been denounced in a poster, and that he himself has been shut out of his revolutionary group -- as the son of an intellectual. Within a single day he's gone from revolutionary youth to excluded son of a reactionary. He goes home that night to find his sisters threatening to move away to live at school, so as to distance themselves from his supposedly traitorous father. His father sits whispering, almost to himself, that the children should sincerely believe in the party and Mao, and that things will turn out right if they do so.
This book is filled with tumultuous turns like that. Just when you've seen the sharp edge of one dilemma, it changes shape and presents another side. Throughout all those twists, Liang Heng keeps a sympathy for those around him that brings you through the book. He can understand why people caught in these events acted like they did, and he doesn't seem to really hate anyone for it despite all he's been through. His father and mother, who divorced early during the revolution because of his mother's political background, become very different objects of sympathy, but neither one is regarded with disdain. (His father, in particular, becomes the sort of quietly tragic figure you'd find in some sprawling Russian historical novel.)
Other English language memoirs from these years in China don't approach the startling emotional clarity of this book. Life and Death in Shanghai, in particular, comes across as both shallower and more bitter. Son of the Revolution tells the entire story, first hand, with a sort of forgiveness, a sort of understanding, that I haven't forgotten in the six years since I first read it.
This is worth a rare (for me) five stars.

Angela's Ashes in Red China
By Rottenberg's rotten book review
When consolidating their rule over the most populous nation on Earth, the Red Chinese sought to create a modern industrialized state in place of a feudal and disorganized one. Requiring more than rapid industrialization to realize their goals, the communists also sought to suffuse every sector of Chinese society with rigid political mentality requiring not only strict party loyalty, but a state of constant revolution, in which individuals and communities constantly sought to prove their mastery of "revolutionary discipline". Various miniature revolutions shake China - turning friends and relatives against each other - with fearful consequences for those who couldn't convince the more politically reliable of their strongly "revolutionary" desires. Because the meaning of the revolution itself is vague, even those who would have thought their backgrounds free of "black marks", find themselves under the gun - whether because of views an individual no longer professes, or association with others having displayed a lack of revolutionary discipline or simply because one may comply with a dictate only to find the Party changed direction completely.
Liang Heng, whose birth coincided with Ho Chi Minh's epic victory over the French in 1954, suffered for all the above reasons. Never a "rightist" himself, Heng suffered horribly during China's ten year political unrest of the 1960's and 70's. Heng's mother, a loyal party member in the late 1950's, reluctantly obeys the party's order to criticize superiors during the "Hundred Flowers" movement. Heng, like many, is never sure if the follow-up to the "Flowers" (in which those who faithfully criticized their elders were then rounded up for their insuboridination) was a knee jerk reaction to the unexpected ferocity the earlier campaign engendered, or whether the earlier movement was intended to weed out those critics to begin with. Only the consequences - in which Heng's mother must wear the feared "rightist cap", forever soilng her revolutionary record and that of her family - is considered. When Heng's father, who writes for the Hunan daily, becomes suspect for his admitted youthful infatuation with the nationalistic Koumintang, the family's political reputation suffers even more. Though loyal communists, Heng finds his father's name listed as an enemy on the many revolutioanry placards around their home city of Changsha. The Party maxim's - stressing tolerance for those whose backgrounds evince youthful mistakes - does little for Heng, since the revolution is guided by fervor and not nuance. And, though Maosim meant that party loyalty superceded family loyalty (sorry Confucious), it didn't prevent family members from suffering for political sins of family members.
Through the turmoil - which evolves from parades to open warfare in the street using everything from sticks and stones to missiles - Heng avoids sanctimony. Heng suffered much of the chaos as a child, and isn't above admitting that he too wrote some revolutionary placards himself. He works hard to rehabilitate his father whose first major action is to cast out Heng's mother for her "rightist cap". Experience proved the decision, for its pain, proved correct, if insufficient, to protect the family. "Old Liang" himself suffered mightily for the cause, never once complaining. As a middle-aged exile, forced to bring the revolution to the peasants by joing them, Heng's father survived the indiginities of a country-bound city-types, never pausing to warm the lives of the peasants with Marxist fervor. Heng's private revolution, unlike the larger one surrounding him, is about nuance, and the narrative never attempts to surpass the perspective of a child of Heng's age during the cultural revolution. Like the more recent "Angela's Ashes", Heng knows that the more credible narrator is the one who feels and experiences rather than faithfully records. And the experience, rather than one of victimization is of survival. The revolution's true enemies are long gone by the time the cultural revolution degenerates into civil war, and only Heng's clear and non-judgmental narrative can spot that the war's victims and instigators are one and the same.

French Ways and Their Meaning (Classic Reprint), by Edith Wharton

Excerpt from French Ways and Their Meaning

This book is essentially a desultory book, the result of intermittent observation, and often, no doubt, of rash assumption. Having been written in Paris, at odd moments, during the last two years of the war, it could hardly be more than a series of disjointed notes; and the excuse for its publication lies in the fact that the very conditions which made more consecutive work impossible also gave unprecedented opportunities for quick notation.

The world since 1914 has been like a house on fire. All the lodgers are on the stairs, in dishabille. Their doors are swinging wide, and one gets glimpses of their furniture, revelations of their habits, and whiffs of their cooking, that a life-time of ordinary intercourse would not offer.

Fine introduction.
By A Customer
This delightful little volume is a compilation of articles written for American troops bound for France in World War One. While their effect on the average doughboy may be questionable, they give a powerful and invaluable insight into one of the most perceptive minds of the age.

Wharton, in her most engaging and always readable style, discusses First Impressions, and examines issues of Reverence, Taste, Intellectual Honesty, and Continuity, and, in her essay on the New Frenchwoman, reveals perhaps more about herself than her subjects.

Highly recommended as a fine introduction to the author.

Good book, poor print quality
By Amazon Customer
It's important to know that this edition (Publisher: Kessinger Publishing, LLC (April 10, 2007)) is a bound photocopy. That is, it has an ordinary softcover binding, but most of the pages are blurry photocopies of the original edition. (All of this is explained in a note at the start of the book, but is not mentioned in the ordering information.)

The background of the pages is dark, dotted gray and the print is not clear. Many of the pages also have underlining and notes (that is, the original pages that were photocopied have these marks). The dark gray background affects about three fourths of the pages; perhaps half the pages are marked with underlines or comments.

Needless to say, all of this affects the book's value. Most of the book is physically hard to read because of these problems, which are not (currently) mentioned in the book's description information.

My one star is for the physical problems with this particular edition, not the contents of the book itself. (Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have any way to differentiate between them.) The book is hard to find and people who are interested in it may well be willing to put up with the ugly physical presentation in order to get an affordable copy, but you should be informed before you buy it that for reading purposes this isn't any better than a bad fax or photocopy of a real book.

A good primer on French culture.
By S. Gue
Edith Wharton was a very observant writer and a great novelist. Her observations on the French in most cases are right on target. However, people traveling to France for work or pleasure need to understand that she is writing about a France in the early part of the 20th centur before and during World War I. When a person writes about a culture there observations only pertain to that particular time and that particular place. Another, thing to rember she is also writes about upper-class french life, which is a problem I find with almost all books on the French. Other then those two critices this is a very entertaining and insightful book on the French.

On parting coment, remeber that when someone writes about a diffrent culture they are using generalizations that may be true of the culture but not everyone in it.

A first for me by this author. Not for the faint of heart
By Crazie Betty
3.5 Stars, I definitely enjoyed this read although it's been kind of difficult for me to nail down how I wanted to review it. Let me first start off with saying this was my first erotic-horror read ever. And I don't typically read paranormal fiction either, so this book was entirely out of my comfort zone.

Right off the bat I was a little unnerved being that we are immediately introduced to the H, Jack, who happens to be very much into fgt (female genital torture), which is not something I am in any way interested in. What I appreciated is that, even though this is definitely not my thing, it was handled with class and tact. I mean that in the fact that just because our H is into some very extreme S&M, he is not a sociopath, psychopath, abuser, kidnapper, etc. He is an upstanding citizen that cares about how his partner is taking his treatment of them and doesn't try to force his particular brand of kink onto anyone unwilling. I still had a really really hard time not flinching through those scenes though. If it had been a movie I would've had my hands over my eyes barely peaking through my fingertips.

The story moves along at a good pace and once I was reading, I had a hard time putting it down. The whole story behind Crowhurst Castle is exciting and fascinating and I was so happy to be reading a story that seemed so fresh and new and not overly-done (at least to me). Once our team is inside the castle they almost immediately start feeling the affects of the overtly erotic and sensual environment, as well as the obviously still present energy of the same type. I also really appreciated that while it starts immediately, it's a fairly gradual incline into depravity as the characters doubt their thoughts and actions and even their own feelings, while the castle slowly takes them over.

So why only 3.5 stars?

My first misgiving is that the side characters all seemed the same to me. Constantly throughout the story I had to be reminded of the who Luke was compared to Lucas and who Beth, Charlotte, Hannah and Olivia were on their own. I knew some where actors, some were investigators, and others were camera people but none of them really seemed to have their own "self" and all felt very flat. I honestly had completely forgotten about Madison until she shows up to help with the door.

Another thing that was initially extremely hard to overcome is the lightening quick POV changes. From one paragraph to another you hear from two different people but it's not easily identified until you read into the paragraph whose POV you are reading from. This does get a little easier as the story progresses but only some.

My last thing is the fgt. There were a lot of s&m things that happened that I thought were very erotic but because fgt is not something I find appealing, it was hard to read through some of those scenes and not skip over them. Although I completely understand the need for those scenes due to how Crowhurst obtained his power, the more pain the better essentially.

These seem like a lot of negatives but I assure you that the story is strong enough on it's own that most readers of the genre shouldn't have any difficulty enjoying the read for what it is. I, for one, absolutely enjoyed the story.

The ending did seem to leave this open for the possibility of a sequel but I honestly don't feel like it's necessary. I also don't feel like keeping it open ended did any harm. The way it ended made sense given the kind of person we are shown Crowhurst to be.

All in all I liked this read and would be very happy to read other works by this author in the future.

Copy provided to me by the author in exchange for my honest review, through the BDSM group r2r discussion.
