No written content? Really?

As a previous reviewer wrote, this book is a nice object. It is beautifully printed, well-designed, and the selected images are uniformly of high quality. But not a word of written comment? Seriously? The short paragraph on the back cover (essentially the same as the product description on the Amazon page) is the ONLY written commentary of the entire book! So what readers are getting is a group of pretty pictures by contemporary and not-widely known designers. The images are united by a clean and dominantly retro aesthetic and you can like the work, dislike it, use it as visual inspiration. . . but context please??? Make that up for yourself, I guess.

The product description above notes "Instead, the book shows that it is only our idealistic conception of modernism that gives earlier work attributes that it never actually had." Please describe this "idealistic conception" and the "attributes" that the earlier work never had? I think it is a huge leap over a gaping chasm to make that claim. While I do personally like the work showcased in this book, I am left hanging to draw my own assumptions about it. Nothing about this book furthers, challenges, disputes whatever ideas I have of modernism. It is a wasted opportunity. There are plenty of people willing to bash modernism and, sadly, here are two editors who apparently find value in it but their support for it, by lack of written content, is more lip service than rallying cry.

This is such a cool book! From the cover paper stock to the paper stock of the interior pages, it's fine attention to detail like this that's not so common in books these days. Each page comes alive and commands your full attention. While the colors are bright, they also have that retro, dull look which plays up the theme. If you're a fan of design where old is new again, you need to pick this up. Learning of so many new artists and designers alone makes the book worth it. Only 4 stars because I would've liked to see more new ideas rather than so many that literally lifted from the originals. The artist featured on the cover is the only one that really blew me away with originality. Still, I know it's definitely a book I'll flip to over and over again for inspiration!

Where's the context?

Why this book is titled "The Modernist" is a mystery to this reader. This blurb will contain more words than the book itself, which is comprised entirely of graphically compelling mock book covers - hundreds of them redone in the historic style of the 50s and 60s. (Think of the bold, red iconic carousel horse on the cover of the 1st edition of Catcher in the Rye). I presume the book is not a work of humor, but I smiled and nearly laughed at the incongruities of its mission. This book is a cross between a historic 1950s Mad magazine parody of contemporary culture and a graphic design course in which students are assign the task of remaking modern fiction titles into the bold, blunt flat iconic styles so characteristic of 50s and 60s paperbacks. These students get A's: the covers are well done and historically convincing. The humor comes from imagining Lemony Snicket's and Harry Potter appearing decades before their true release dates with delightful, chuckle-triggering choices of icons to represent the motive force of that particular work of fiction.

I can't give it more than 3 stars because of the utter lack of context and supporting text. It's "gee-whiz look at me."

"Jessica, we're safe now.  I have to catch my breath."  Elizabeth bent over and placed her hands on her knees for support.  They had just entered the woods, and she felt more secure under the blanket of darkness the trees provided.

"OK, but not for more than a minute," her twin warned.

"Any sign of the guards?," Elizabeth asked, taking in great gulps of the cool night air and resting a hand over her wildly beating heart.

"Not that I can see," Jessica answered, glancing around and squinting into the woods.

They had stopped in a small clearing, surrounded by tall, thick trees.  The moon had risen, casting a cool white light over the weeds and shrubs of the small field.  The clearing was carpeted in soft grass, which felt spongy beneath Elizabeth's satin shoes.  Crickets sang, and somewhere a frog croaked.  At any other time Elizabeth would have been soothed by the beauty of the night.  But since they'd begun their escape, a concern had been weighing on her mind, and she could no longer deny its urgency.

"Jessica," Elizabeth began, "I know we decided that finding Jacques is the right thing to do, and I agree that he owes you an explanation, but . . . I really need to see Laurent.  I can't stand the thought of him thinking I'm . . . we're thieves . . . and maybe he could help--"

Jessica cut her off with a swipe of her hand through the air.  "Elizabeth, the closer we are to the chateau, the more chance there is that we'll be recaptured.  I just don't think it's worth the risk," she finished.

"How would you feel if a guy you really cared about thought you were a criminal?"  Elizabeth was close to tears, and in trying to be quiet, her voice came out harsh and raspy.

Jessica nervously raked her hand through her hair.  When she spoke, Elizabeth could feel the desperation in her words.  "And how are you going to convince Laurent you're not a thief if we end up back in the dungeon?"

Jessica was angry, but Elizabeth wasn't in the mood to go along with her twin.  "Jessica Wakefield, you are the one who badgered me into coming to Europe against my better judgment, right?"

"I know, but--"

"And how many times have I gone along with your schemes in the past?"  Elizabeth interrupted.

"A few," Jessica mumbled.

"A few?  Let's see, there was the time you stayed out all night and I had to cover for you the entire day because you couldn't drag yourself out of bed," Elizabeth began, ticking off her fingers one by one.  "And then there was the time at camp when I had to compete in all your color war events . . . need I go on?"

Jessica held up both hands in a classic defensive posture.  "OK, OK, I get the point.  Enough with the guilt trip!"

But Elizabeth was warming to her subject and refused to let her twin off easy.  "You do this to me all the time!  You beg and plead until I do what you want, then when we end up in trouble, you're no help at all!  Now I want just one little thing, and you have to go all logical on me!  How can you let me down like this?

"Good grief, Liz," Jessica said, grabbing Elizabeth by the shoulders.  "Enough already.  So we'll go back and try to see Prince Charming.  But if we get caught, so help me, Liz . . ."

Elizabeth was exhausted by her tirade, and she gave Jessica a tired smile.  "Thanks, Jess."

Jessica let her go and shrugged.  "I had to do something to get you to shut up.  I bet every guard on the island heard you," she said grumpily.  She grabbed Elizabeth by the wrist, and they started back to the chateau.

As they trudged across the grass Jessica grumbled under her breath, "We came all this way . . . now we have to go all the way back . . . and for some drippy prince. . . ."

Despite their awful situation, Elizabeth was having trouble keeping her laughter in check.  "Oh, Jessica," she finally said.  "Nag, nag, nag, all the time."

They broke from the woods and approached the chÔteau silently.  The ballroom was easy to find.  Music filtered across the lawn from the partially opened, tall windows that were blazing with light.

With Jessica close behind, Elizabeth crept to one of the windows and peered inside.  All the women wore ball gowns, in every color of the rainbow.  Precious jewels glittered on each throat and around every wrist.  Some of the ladies carried fans, which they flicked back and forth as they floated around the room.  The couples who weren't dancing lined the walls, laughing and talking in a carefree manner.  Almost everyone was holding a glass of bubbly champagne.

There were so many people whirling around the dance floor, Elizabeth could barely make out their faces.  Then a tall, dark-haired guy twirled past, and Elizabeth gasped.  It was Laurent.  And he was dancing with Antonia . . . and smiling!  How could he?  Did he care so little for Elizabeth that he could carry on as if she didn't exist?

What I wouldn't give to trade places with that disgusting Antonia! Elizabeth thought desperately.  That should be me in that gorgeous, fairy-tale dress, dancing in Laurent's arms!  And Antonia in the dungeon!  She smiled wryly at the thought of Antonia shivering in the cold darkness of that musty cell.

Antonia was wearing a smug look of triumph on her face that made Elizabeth want to scratch her eyes out.  She felt a sob catch in her throat at the frustration of it all.  A tear rolled down her cheek.

Jessica abruptly pulled Elizabeth away from the window.

Elizabeth whirled around to face her sister.

"Oh, Jess, did you see--

"Forget about the couple of the century for a minute," Jessica interrupted quietly, squeezing Elizabeth's arm reassuringly.  "We have company."

Elizabeth's heart froze as she expected to see a troop of guards coming their way.

Instead she saw the three younger children standing behind Jessica.

"What are you three doing out here?"  Elizabeth demanded, glad to have something to focus on besides Laurent and Antonia.

Pierre was scowling.  "Mademoiselle Elizabeth, why are you still here?"

Jessica rolled her eyes and jerked her thumb at Elizabeth, her mouth twisted into a smirk.

"Lovesick here had to have one last word with your brother," she said sarcastically in a stage whisper.

Pierre leaned over to the giggling Claudine and whispered a flurry of French into her ear.  As his younger sister sped off into the chateau Pierre bowed to Elizabeth with a flourish of his little hand.  "I am not as handsome as my brother, but surely, mademoiselle, you have time for one dance with me," he said gallantly, deepening his voice.

"Oh, no," Jessica moaned.  "Are you crazy?  Now I know we're going to get caught."

"No, pretty Jessica," Pierre said with a smile that was hauntingly like Laurent's.  "You are safe.  No one even knows you are out of the cell."  He held out his arms to Elizabeth, and she couldn't resist the sweet gesture.

Pierre actually danced well, which Elizabeth should have expected.  As the son of European royalty, dancing was part of his education.  He whirled her around rather expertly.

Jessica threw up her hands.  "The whole world is insane," she said, "but who cares?  I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."  And with that she picked up little Manon and began to dance too.

The music swelled and subsided, swelled and subsided as they glided through the steps of the dance.  Manon was seized with fits of giggles, and Elizabeth saw her little hands gripping Jessica in a stranglehold around her neck.  Pierre beamed up at her, seeming much older than six.  "You dance so well," he said to Elizabeth.

"Thank you, sir," Elizabeth replied primly.  "So do you."

"What about us?"  Jessica insisted, dipping Manon so close to the ground, she squealed in delight.

"You two look great together," Elizabeth said, laughing.  "You know, Jessica, you should dance with more three-year-olds.  It suits you!"

"Thanks a lot," Jessica said in her most sarcastic tone.

Elizabeth suspected that Claudine had been sent to get Laurent, and she hoped the little girl would hurry.  Just one last word with her prince was all she wanted, then she didn't care what else happened!

A GREAT BOOK! Sweet Valley Is Great yet Again!

After reading this book, I felt like i was actually in Paris! This was a way romantic story, with a great plot. Thats so mean of Jacques, how he sets Jessica up with the jewel and everything.. but its so sweet how he apoligizes at the end! If i ever went to france, i would want my vacation to be exactly the was this book was! Anyway, this book was totally romantic, full of action, and great for any fairy tale lover! I totally recomend it!

Sweet Valley Rocks!

Once again, here is another great Sweet Valley High book! This is a romantic and exciting one, with the twins in Europe! If you like SVH, you're gonna like this one, but be sure to read the other 2 as well! By the way, I TOTALLY reccomend, Sweet Valley High, Senior Year, starting with "can't stay away". But i am curious, does Elizabeth ever see Laurent again or remember him? LoL kay ash! its a book!

This was a good book. I REALLY LIKE IT. I have to find out what happens with Elizabeth and the prince, do they meet again?

Colin Bootman was born in Trinidad where he spent the first seven years of his life. During this time, he was inspired by the island s rich and diverse culture. Soon after moving to the United States, Mr. Bootman embraced art as a measure of escape from the pressures of adjusting to a new environment at an early age. Mr. Bootman cites finding his first comic book as the life-changing experience that marked the beginning of his career as an artist.

Mr. Bootman began formal training at LaGuardia High School of the Arts, which served to deepen his appreciation for other disciplines, and solidified his own passion for the visual arts. In college, Mr. Bootman studied photography, writing, and illustration, honing his skills under the tutelage of professional artists. Mr. Bootman was encouraged to pursue children s book art, as it allowed him the freedom to express himself through various media. Ultimately, the instructors at the School of Visual Arts prepared Mr. Bootman for the challenges of working as a professional illustrator.

Mr. Bootman s first book, "Young Frederick Douglass", was published in 1994 and received starred reviews. He has since illustrated many children s books, textbooks, periodicals, and book covers. Mr. Bootman has worked with several publishers including Random House ("Follow the Leader"), Harper Collins ("In My Momma s Kitchen"), Scholastic ("Oh, No, Toto!"), and Holiday House ("Papa s Mark"). Mr. Bootman is the recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor 2004, the Schneider Family Book Award 2006, the Ashley Bryan Lifetime Achievement Honor 2006, and several others. His books have won such awards as The Teachers Choice Award, The Comstock Award, The Storytelling World Award, The Golden Kite Honor, and many others. Mr. Bootman s first written and Illustrated book ("Fish For The Grand Lady"), debuted in the fall of 2006. In addition to illustrating Mr. Bootman enjoys teaching and presenting to students throughout the country.

Mr. Bootman credits the lively rhythms and vibrant palette of Trinidad with leaving an indelible mark on his creative expression. He continues to grow as an artist as he welcomes the challenges that each new project invites. As Mr. Bootman s work serves to inspire both early readers and future artists alike, he hopes to encourage young minds to embrace and follow their passions.

This is a marvelous book about a young boy who finds the courage to defy a "whites only" sign and stand up for his beliefs!

Louis stood at the bottom of the library steps glancing longingly at the books inside. It would be nice if he could count them, but that would be impossible because there was a little sign in the entrance way that said, "WHITES ONLY." He decided he'd better move along. He had his lunch pail and a notebook in hand and he thought about that essay he was going to have to write on President Lincoln. It was 1951 and a boy should be able to borrow a book from any library in Alabama, but that wasn't going to happen any time soon. All the good stuff was reserved for white people. Heck, he couldn't even have "strawberry milkshakes at the drugstore lunch counter!"

When he got home, his Mama knew he was out of sorts, but he wouldn't say anything. He didn't even want a glass of lemonade. At school the next day Mrs. Yates was teaching them about the Civil War. She was talking about Lincoln and stated that "He dared to stand up for what he believed in, and that made a lot of people mad." Louis wanted to know more about Abe, the boy, but the book he had didn't answer any of his questions. There were no books about him at the church library either. There was only one thing left for Louis to do. Would he be brave enough to walk up those library steps?

This is a marvelous book about a young boy who finds the courage to defy a "whites only" sign and stand up for what he believed in. The storyline was heartwarming and had just the right amount of tension to make me race to the end to find out how Louis fared on his courageous venture. The sweeping artwork, needless to say, was gorgeous and very inspiring. In the back of the book there is an excellent, but brief overview of segregation, a short blurb on President Lincoln and additional recommended book resources. This is a touching tale about courage you won't want to pass up!

At school during a class about the Civil War, Louis asked his teacher if President Lincoln shook things up when he was a child. She suggested he find the answer himself. This simple suggestion proved to be the catalyst of an important step toward equal rights in Louis's local community. Restrictive Jim Crow laws in the early 1950s meant that the Alabama town in which Louis lived was racially segregated, so Louis could only use a small library for colored people in the church basement, which had no books on Lincoln. Louis stood firm and bravely entered the "whites only" public library to research his question, ultimately finding the right book and obtaining a temporary library card in the process.

Based loosely on events in the life of congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, this book offers young learners a clear account of the oppression and injustice that African Americans experienced before the U.S. Supreme Court abolished racial segregation. Engaging text and dramatic illustrations make the book an excellent choice for teachers and parents seeking new picture books about black history and social justice.

Wonderful mentor text

Recently shared this book with my third grade class as a mentor text. We discussed the setting and its significance to understanding the characters and their actions. The children truly enjoyed the book and have referred to it in other discussions. We will revisit when we explore the genre of historical fiction.

A Great Resource Book

A well written book. With an easy to follow sequences and illustrations. I was worried, at first, that to use the plans would require damaging the books. But a quick email to the authors results in them reminding me, to read page 9. You can access their website after purchase of the book, and print out extra copies of the plans. They offer a lot of different scales as well. My only complaint is the print on the sequences page is a little to small. Highly recommend this book. And Iggy and Seb are great.

Epic Battle Scenes

As you might guess from the title, the bulk of this book is taken up with a huge battle that envelopes the city where all the various good guys, bad guys, wolves and dragons have wound up. With multiple points of view, deadly sieges, skirmishes beyond the walls, assassination attempts and political wrangling, there is always something going on. By the end of it all, the current threads are all tied up, but there is plenty of scope for the saga to continue.

Interesting story, if long and slow

Although I enjoyed the story, I found the pace terribly slow. As is common with books these days, it is a series and although this book sort of raps up the story from the previous three books (sections?), it really does not conclude the story. And, as is also common, there is considerable proofing and editing that was needed throughout the series. Even so bad as the author misnaming one of the wolves. Hope the wolf is more forgiving than I suspect. But, as I say, this sort of thing is so common today that one just has to try to overlook it.

I don't know how much use I will get out of this book without having search enabled. I was able to search in the preview, but the purchased book states that search is currently not available.

I was already disappointed that there were no page numbers only locations, but felt that I could work through that as I wanted it primarily as a reference to other authors. I really don't see how I'm going to use a 752 page electronic book as a reference if it doesn't have search!!!

So, I'm afraid it is mostly useless to me. I'm giving it 3 stars, because if you plan to read it cover to cover, this may not be too much a problem.
