Great New Series

Other reviewers have given a synopsis. I just want to give raves for this book. I literally could not "turn it off" (I was using my Kindle.) My only problem with the book was the intense craving I got for orange-peanut chicken. I had my fingers crosses that there would be a recipe, but I'll have to do this on my own.

I was particularly interested in the build up to the background events concerning Bea. A mystery within a mystery. The parallels to the Christie novel were particularly well written.

This is light enough to qualify for a beach read, but one could easily get sunburned, because the book is very engaging.

Kudos for this new series!! I want the next one tomorrow!

Mad for Mayhem

Feuding neighbors, mysterious murder, paralyzing snowstorm,awesome Victorian B & B, and liberal homage to a mystery classic, "Murder on the Orient Express"; what's not to like? Not much, that's what. I must admit; I am a fan of Kylie Logan/ Casey Daniels cozy series and when I learned she was premiering a new series, The League of Literary Ladies, I was hoping for the best. I was not disappointed. Set in Ohio on South Bass Island, on Lake Erie, just a ferry boat ride and stones throw from Cleveland (well, maybe a little more than a stone's throw) "Mayhem" starts off in court, and gallops off to murder and well, mayhem.
Bea Cartwright, the protagonist with a secret in her past is a well developed character already, with promise of further interesting layers to be added in the forthcoming series. Her 'frenemies', Chandra and Kate add contrast and humor to the set-up and reason for The League of Literary Ladies.
You can already read a synopsis of the plot and I am not going to give anything away in this review. I highly recommend you get a copy of this book and settle in for a satisfying read.

Good start in New series

I am always on the lookout for a new cozy series since most of the authors I prefer to read only publish a book a year. This book caught me by surprise. It was a pretty solid start for a new series.

Bea, the main character has moved to a small island and is in the process of opening a bed and breakfast. The problem is that she cannot seem to get along with her new neighbors, Chandra and Kate. After being unable to resolve their issues in a civilized manner, the judge on the island sentences them participating in a book club. After a disastrous first meeting, the three ladies, along with a fourth club member named Luella,stumble upon the body of Peter Chan, the owner of the islands local Chinese restaurant. The four ladies must learn to appreciate each other's differences in order to solve the murder.

The author provides us with just enough information about each character to keep the story moving forward. Bea, the main character appears to be not what she seems, Chandra, who was once known as Sandra, has become hippie like and Kate is a little to straight laced. The reader can anticipate that future books in the series will provide additional information about these characters.

What I really enjoyed about this novel was how the author used the same style of uncovering and arranging facts like Agatha Christie's Hurcule Poirot. It makes perfect sense as the first book chosen by the ladies is Murder on the Orient Express. As this is one of the greatest mystery novels of all time, and one of my favorite mystery books, it was easy to see why the author chose this book as the basis for her mystery.

I am looking forward to the next book in the interested to see the character development of all the ladies

Fantastic book on Traditional inshore British Craft.

This book is a wealth of information on traditional craft between 1820 and 1920. The many photographs which are of course mainly black and white are superb.

I even slept well the night before because I was able to direct my nervous energy towards rehearsing the plan laid out in the book. You could waste hours reading bad interview advice that overwhelms you with minutia. This book saves you that time. Considering how little this book costs, this is the definition of value. Buy it - you won't regret it.

A Great Asset for Job Seekers and even First Time Interviewers

I got this book because I was compelled by the small number of pages. I came away impressed because it synthesizes the main challenges of interviewing and provides actionable strategies for the true job seeker. Specifically, this book highlights some tactics to avoid rambling during an interview, a common yet catastrophic mistake most interviewees make.
This book will also help you if you're getting started interviewing candidates, as it gives you a nice benchmark to judge a candidate's ability to structure a problem and their level of preparation for the interview.
Don't look here If you're looking for a big book of questions and answers. However, I would question your job seeking strategy and motivation if you can't put the work to create compelling answers that tell your own story. You can Google interview questions and answers, but be aware that your interviewer can find the same answers as easily as you and you will be caught. You need to differentiate yourself in the job search, and Googling answers isn't a way to do it. Thinking through how to crisply and concisely tell your story will, thus my 5 star rating for this book.

On Judaism is a collection of lectures by Martin Buber that had a profound influence on European Judaism in the early 20th century. The most interesting parts of this book are the lectures Buber delivered between 1909 and 1918, whose achievement was to convince intellectuals once again to take seriously the mystical elements of Judaism, such as kaballah. Assimilationism, secularism, and materialist skepticism had convinced many European Jews that religious Judaism demanded mindless allegiance to outmoded laws--a situation, as Rodger Kamenetz notes in his introduction to this volume, that bears a striking resemblance to the mindset of many young Jews today. Buber's involvement with Theodore Herzl's Zionist movement (which led to the creation of the state of Israel) gave him credibility with Jewish intellectuals, however. He used this credibility to persuade his listeners that there is an essential difference between rigid, legalistic "religion" and the vital, world-engaging "religiosity" that, he contended, is the prevailing character of Torah. As Kamenetz writes, "Buber's enduring insight is that Judaism is a process, not a conclusion: a religion of presence, and not simply an historical religion." Obviously, much has changed since Buber delivered these early lectures--the two World Wars, the Holocaust, and the rise of Reformed Judaism have forever altered the context in which young Jews define their religious identity. But Buber's driving question--"I must ask myself again and again: Is this particular law addressed to me and rightly so?"--is still the most important one for Jews who seek to understand themselves as people of the book. About the Author
Martin Buber (1878–1965), one of the paramount spiritual leaders of the twentieth century, is best known as the author of I and Thou—the basic formulation of his philosophy of dialogue—and for his appreciation of Hasidim, which made a deep impact on Christian as well as Jewish thinkers. Born in Vienna, and raised in Lemberg, Buber studied philosophy at the University of Berlin. Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938, he emigrated to Israel, where he taught social philosophy at the Hebrew University until his retirement in 1951. He lived in Jerusalem until his death in 1965.

A fundamental inquiry

Buber raises fundamental questions about the meaning of Jewishness. His profundity is unquestioned, as his poetic insightfulness. However his casting aside of the Halakhah means that he cuts himself off from what is arguably, both the most traditional and most vibrant form of Judaism in our world.

I want to myself look through these essays again, and see if they give new directions in regard to understanding the fundamental questions of Jewish identity and meaning in the modern world.

That Challenging Buber

I have never been enamored of Martin Buber’s work. The special tone of “existential Judaism,” the field he plowed, always had a nice ring, and suggested great potential: a Judaism which unfolded itself not in vast, overwhelming abstractions, but in encounter with the world.

This seems to be the core of religious Judaism anyway. The act, the deed, the mitzvoth is performed, and it is in that performance in this world that we find G-d.

But Buber’s opus I and Thou is an opaque work, largely devoid of Jewish content. He studied Christian mysticism closely, and the work appears largely inspired by it; it also hurts the Jewish tenor of the book that many of the paraphrases are from the gospels.

That is why his collection of essays On Judaism are as helpful as they are frustrating in understanding Buber's philosophy. The groundwork for Buber’s connection and disenchantment with his religion is here laid out far more clearly that in I and Thou.

Like many turn of the century, educated Jews, Buber was disenchanted with Jewish religious ritual. He says “Increasingly, the God-permeated, commanding, creative element was being replaced by the ridged, merely preserving, merely continuing, merely defensive element of Judaism.” Buber was enamored of early Hasidism, but thought that the contemporary forms of those sects were fossilized. He had an equal contempt of the “pale, feeble attempt at reform” of more liberal Judaism.

We live, he explains “in [a] uncertain state…. The last structure of the Oriental spirit within Judaism appears to be shaken, with no foundation laid for the new one.” However he believes the foundation does exist, in the soul of the individual Jew.

So what does Buber want beyond this vague formulation? It is hard to know with great certainty. He wants Jewish people to delve into themselves to find their Jewish spirit, but also turn to their community (not mutually exclusive, of course, but still confusing, given his main thrust). He says marvelous things like this: “…all genuine personal religion is merely the discovery and raising of an ancient treasure, the unveiling and freeing of folk-religion that had grown beneath the surface.” Which I agree with wholeheartedly, but again Buber does not produce a program beyond very vague outlines, like “[t]he spirit of Israel is the spirit of realization.” Yet for Buber, these times do not present any adequate way for people to reach this level of realization, whatever that might be. I would imagine that program is found in I and Thou, but that is a nearly impenetrable work. Rather than read, it must be explained.

So these essays are challenging, interesting, disagreeable, overly explicit in some places, and under explained in others. All I can say in a positive sense of Buber’s essays is that he is tackling big issues about modern Jewish identity. Although I disagree with most of his conclusions, and wish his Jewish existentialism took some other form, I admire him for the effort.

Fittingly, the first two sections of this book offer an examination of several television series or films which use these legendary women as key prototypes or points of departure for their own heroines or protagonists. Section one includes a discussion of modern-day Cassandra figures, including the witches and other "seers" of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Charmed, Hex, and Tru Calling. Section two discusses modern television shows whose main characters represent a contemporary spin on Joan of Arc, including Joan of Arcadia and the short-lived Wonderfalls. Finally, section three investigates female mediums and other "psychic detectives" in reality television series such as Psychic Investigators and Rescue Mediums; the popular television dramas Medium, Ghost Whisperer, and Afterlife; and contemporary films such as Ghost, The Gift, and Premonition.

A beautifully written, nuanced argument by a brilliant young man. Informative, passionate and succinct, this is superior literary criticism on every level. In every poetic phrase, Matz outlines and advances a original vision that others in his field may have sensed in glimmers and shadows, but never fully articulated. This study is impressive in both its depth and bredth.

Mr.June's extensive career in law enforcement and the private security industry has afforded others a rare glimpse of the dedication,commitment,and professionalism one needs to undertake in the protective services arena. I have had the privilege and good fortune to work with Dale June on numerous assignments in the private sector from 1995 to the present.Most important,was his willingness to answer questions in a very thorough manner and discuss the application of protective principles in the field to enhance our overall effectiveness.I truly believe this speaks to the pertinent aspects of the book since Mr.June has been able to draw on personal anecdotes to further highlight protective protocol and application. Dale June really hits the nail on the head with this comprehensive text on EP(Executive Protection). As one of the few women in the profession, I have seen that little is often addressed in 'so called EP books' as to the unique situations that we encounter.
June includes material that is essential to the neophyte and experienced professional alike. His text is fast becoming a required reading, and is endorsed by the Director of Training and Professional Certification of the IAPPS (International Association for Professional Protection Specialists) as a core text for those entering the profession.
Whether you are looking at the profession from the perspective of just starting, or revisiting the basics to stay on top of your game. This book is a MUST read.

As a professional who has been in the industry for a long time I have read numerous publications on the subject of Executive Protection but have not come accross material such as this.
I must say that Mr. June goes a step further with this book than most authors so far. He tells it as it is. The book not only covers the basics but also offers very useful information on many points to both begginers and seasonal professionals like myself. Although the book is aimed at the protection specialists in the USA some of the principles still apply world wide. I have thouroghly enjoyed it and I would definately recommend the book to anyone either interested or involved in the industry!
