Not a helpful tool

These were discouraging and in no way helped me memorize anything. The study guide Texes core ec-6 291 was the best help. There are also things like certify teacher.com and other online resources. But these were a waste of time as I do not have a photographic memory. Below I took a picture of how many words are crammed on one note card. Notice the tiny writing!

If you don't know how to play these types of games, then the book is very good. However, if you know how to play GTA, you can pretty much figure out how to play RDR. This does not contain the walkthrough or mission information or any secret tips. You're better off going to [...] and just printing out what you want.

Great DCP tips!

fter completing my college program in Fall 2013, I longed for more ways to connect with my Disney past and keep in in my present and future. After connecting with Elly Collins in a DCP Alumni group, I was excited to hear about her and her sister's experience during their program so I eagerly bought this ebook.

It was such a change to read about someone else's DCP experience. Not only did the Collins girls attend the WDW college program instead of my Disneyland program, but they attended as sisters and roommates which made for a unique experience.

I wish I had found a book like this before going on my program. They cover everything a potential DCP attendee needs to know, and give advice on things to avoid as well. Much appreciated!

I loved this book! It was so charming/refreshing to read this book/blog/advice by two such positive, beautiful and wholesome young women. I do not know a lot about Disney - but I had NO IDEA how much work and planning went into making the MAGIC in Disneyland and Disneyworld! I loved hearing their comments about work ethic, customer service, general attitudes about life, and sharing chores in a crowded apartment. We need more people in this world like Elly and Caroline! I can't wait to see how their next careers turn out - and I look forward to working with Caroline as she does her student teaching! :) Leigh Meinig

George: Elly and Caroline Collins sent us review copies of their new book, Two Girls and a Mouse Tale, which is all about their extended Disney College Program (DCP) at Walt Disney World. The two sisters spent the fall and spring semesters in the DCP and blogged about their experiences. They turned the blog/diary into a book with the intent to help students and parents look at the DCP and decide if it would be a worthwhile program.

Jeff: The Disney College Program is a really big deal right now. I feel like now, more than ever, more and more college students are trying to get in, and experience working for Disney first hand. There are countless blogs and message boards devoted to the topic, but it’s kind of hard to find all of the content in the same place about the experience: what the expect, what to bring, what not to bring, how it goes, and so on. Elly and Caroline have solved that problem!

George: The sisters do an excellent job of presenting what you need to do to get into the DCP as well as how you need to think about the experience. After reading Amber Earns Her Ears, I wasn’t sure what to expect since that title left me very cold. Elly and Caroline obviously love Disney and want to share their experiences with the world. They mix the good stuff with the not-so-good stuff to present a fairly eye-opening memoir of their time.

Jeff: Listen, it’s college-age kids, all crammed together in small spaces, not knowing who each other are, and forced to live together. Of course problems will arise and personalities will clash. That’s just life. But it was interesting to me to see how Elly and Caroline gave some tips on how to deal with roommates that aren’t pulling their weight (and how they managed to deal with theirs). I mean, the advice can even go for college dorm mates as well. Their tips and suggestions are extremely helpful, and I can see anyone looking to go into the Disney College Program finding this book invaluable. Having said that, we did take issue with a few things.

George: The girls both write very well, but they would often switch between first- and third-person in the same paragraph, sometimes the same sentence. It made the text very confusing and hard to follow. Along the same lines, they would forget to introduce who was writing a specific section and you have to backtrack to figure out if it’s Elly or Caroline.

Jeff: On a smaller (and nerdier note), we did find several inaccuracies about some Disney facts that were presented. At one point, it was mentioned that the Yeti in Expedition Everest is broken because he was jumping up and down, when it was actually the force of the arm and body movements caused the damage. There was also mention of who created the “4 Keys To Safety” (Dick Nunis, not Walt himself, as mentioned in the book). These small things jump out at DisNerds like us, and make us go “Huh?” There were also some grammatical and spelling errors throughout, so it probably could have used one more editing pass.

George: We don’t think that the negative points we mentioned should turn you against the book, at all. It’s just something that’s important to mention, especially with a very small press title. Professionalism counts. Still, Elly and Caroline offer a lot of great information. They’re very positive about Walt Disney World without being too full of pixie dust.

Jeff: We do think the information you presented is valuable to people who are going into the program. It’s a handy guide, and many people will definitely make use of it. It’s definitely the most comprehensive guide about I’ve seen, and it will be great for folks to have all of the information in one place.

The Book That Started It All

When I read reviews of what an interesting, breezily-written little book this is, I have to shake my head a little bit and chuckle to myself. Such an evaluation falls somewhat short with this particular book. While Charles Fort produced several volumes of "unusualness" before this, and while a few spiritualist-based books by authors like R. DeWitt Miller, Nandor Fodor, and others were "out there" to be found, these books were not at all very "high profile" on the general reader's "radar" at the end of the 50s, beginning of the 60s. Sci-Fi and horror novels were, and westerns, and "hard-boiled" private eye and superlawyer stuff (Mike Hammer & Perry Mason), but...."(Alledgedly) True Weird"?...unh unh. Barely a blip on the "scope".

And then came "Stranger Than Science". It's appearance in hardback made only a modest ripple of waves, but when it came out in paperback from Ace Books (and the cover photo shown above IS the original paperback edition cover) the effect was like Boulder Dam breaking. Copies almost "flew" off the bookracks. Why? Because KIDS discovered it and found it in an a format that they could AFFORD (It could be squeezed in between Sergeant Rock, Batman, the Justice League, the Fantastic Four, Tom Swift, Jr., the Hardy Boys, and everything else "currently cool").

The timing was right on the money, too. The post-war baby boomers were hitting 12, 13, 14 years of age at the time and their interests were focussed on "neat stuff" (as Beaver Cleaver might tell you); UFOs, monster movies, Ray Harryhausen stop-motion flicks, "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine ,"Zacherly" and numerous otherlate-night "Shock Theatre' hosts, and any and all things that made you shivver and shake. Readers Digest was putting out stories about "The Mysterious Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas" and "The Elusive Loch Ness Monster", and youngsters were lapping the stuff up. So "Stranger Than Science" hits the mass market paperback shelves at just the right time and with just the right material to grab the attention of a perfect ready-made readership that almost squealed with glee at its appearance.

Edward's book became a huge hit and a BIG bestseller for Ace (who knew a good thing when they had one and who started cranking out more and more "strange but true" books as fast as they could set type on them...and other publishers hopped on the bandwagon right behind them).

Following this trail in the early sixties and on into the seventies came a slew of new author names that blazed through the media: John Keel, Brad Steiger, Ivan Sanderson, Warren Smith, Gray Baker,Erich von Daniken, Otto Binder, Andrew Tomas, and a host of others. And there were kids then that this book "turned on" to strange happenings who made the study of such things lifelong avocations (the Coleman Brothers, Loren and Jerry, spring to mind as such). Most of the gray-haired cryptozoologists and paranormalists of today got fired up for these things originally because of this book. And plenty of wet-behind-the-ears "new generation" aficionadoes of the weird and unexplained owe their own interest base to this man and this book...though they are largely (and typically) clueless about it.

This reviewer here was one of those that came on the "ground floor" of all this true-weirdness stuff. I was thirteen years old at the time and a voracious reader (though mostly of comic books and such fare as "Tom Swift And His Ultrasonic Cycloplane"). I noticed this little softcover on the book rack at the neighborhood drugstore and bought it to take home and read.

And read it I did. Cover to cover. In one Saturday afternoon out on our house's screened-in porch. And I did it mostly open-mouthed, slack-jawed, and half bug-eyed. For instance, one thing I read about was a place Frank Edwards called "The Point of No Return"...located off the southeast coast of the U.S., particularly in the area of the Bahamas...where ships and planes had disappeared without trace for years...and where an entire flight of Navy Avenger torpedo bombers vanished completely in 1945, along with a PBY Flying Boat sent out to search for them (it would be several YEARS yet before Vincent Gaddis would give this place a name..."The Bermuda Triangle"...and OVER A DECADE AND A HALF before Charles Berlitz and others would give it the kind of international notoriety it eventually achieved). A couple of newspaper articles had mentioned these disappearances before, and a write-up in Fate magazine, but...to my knowledge..."Stranger Than Science" was the first BOOK ever to delve into the subject (Yes, it pre-dates "Invisible Horizons").

Other chapters hit on the Tunguska event in Siberia (first I'd ever heard of it), sea serpents, Loch Ness, the disappearance of Tennessee farmer David Lang, an Eskimo village where the RCMP found all the humans vanished, and the scariest thing I'd ever encountered ; "The Invisible Fangs", a story about a Manila girl being attacked and bitten repeatedly by an "invisible entity" that no one could protect her from.

Needless to say, such accounts as these had THIS young'un hyped up like nobody's business! And it can truthfully said that this is one of the most influential books in my life. It fired my imagination, it fired my curiousity, and it fired my desire to go out there and see what the heck was going on in the world.

Is the influence still there? You betcha. I still research such subjects, I have been an off-and-on ghost hunting dilletante for years (and had some MARVELOUS "encounters" down in Savannah, Georgia), and I once got to see a UFO make a monkey out of a jet fighter pilot . No bigfoot yet, no lake monsters, and no Wisconsin werewolves...but I'm still ready to go look. And, ultimately, all because of this book.

Now "Stranger Than Science" is NOT debunk-proof. Over the years, numerous stories that it relates have not held up to investigative scrutiny. "Farmer David Lang" never disappeared in his field because he never existed to begin with. He was something "filched" and "embroidered upon" out of an old Ambrose Bierce short story. And the Eskimo village that befuddled the Mounties? It never did. They weren't any missing Eskimos to find, because no such village existed except in a short horror story entitled "The Wendigo". No sea captain ever pickled a sea serpent's head, either. And in other instances things "kinda-sorta" happened the way Edwards says they did, but there is wiggle room in all that "kinda-sorta" to suggest possible rational explanations (or less "boogery" interpretations) for some of his shivver stories.

There ARE some accounts here that DO stand the test of time and investigation, and this most be acknowledged too. So what all stands up and what all doesn't? Well, heck, I'm not gonna TELL you. To exercise your mind and satisfy your intellectual curiosity, you need to get out there and "dig" for it yourself. That makes everything you learn WORTH more to you than if it is all handed to you on a platter.

Besides, the journey as half the fun.

Just remember, though, before you "diss" this book too much, just remember that it was out blazing the trail in paranormal and cryptozoological studies and research WAY BACK WHEN , and , for all its found-faults, it still has the power to inspire enthusiasm for seeking the truths about the "unknown" and the "unexplained".

Entertaining Teen Fare

Like everyone else, I read and enjoyed this book when I was a teenager. It contains some fascinating, mystifying tales, providing hours of entertainment.
I later discovered it was helpful in prompting a couple of young people (aged 10 - 11) to read more, for entertainment. Edwards' vignettes are stimulating enough to capture the attention of today's youngsters, who've grown up with televisions and computers. STS was a good transition tool for pushing them toward higher quality literature.
As an adult, years after taking a university journalism course, I happened to pick up Stranger Than Science again, and immediately discerned how weak the reporting was, how unsubstantiated the allegations and how non-existent the attribution. Frank Edwards didn't seem to be much of a skeptic, which appeared to result in a lot of blithe acceptance of a lot of fantastic tale-telling.

AS a kid, this book scared the hell out of me. Today, it's fascinating stuff, some of which can still produce a little tingle at the back of the neck. It's worth grabbing up Strangest of All and Strange World, too. All quick reads and great because they're true....

About the Author
Robert Carver worked in the City of London for over a decade. He initially traded exotic derivative products for Barclays investment bank and then worked as a portfolio manager for AHL - one of the world's largest systematic hedge funds - before, during and after the global financial meltdown of 2008. He was responsible for the creation of AHL's fundamental global macro strategy and then managed the fund's multi-billion dollar fixed income portfolio before retiring from the industry in 2013. Robert, who has bachelors and masters degrees in Economics, now systematically trades his own portfolios of futures and equities.

Substance over Style

I have just finished reading this book for a second time. If you subscribe to the notion that money management is the most important part of any trading system ... this one is for you. This book does an excellent job of laying out a compartmentalized approach to building a systematic money management overlay for a quantitative trading system. In full disclosure, this book is not an easy read by any means but the substantive content is excellent.

If you are a novice to trading and investing then this book probably isn't the first, second, or even tenth book you should read on trading. However, if you are experienced trader looking for some fresh approaches to logically evaluating and developing a systematic approach to trading then you may find this one worth your time. For example, there are a few books and plenty of information on the internet regarding fixed fractional position sizing methods. However, this book is the most detailed manuscript that I have come across in regards to constructing a trading system based on a volatility targeting position sizing method. If you liked Following The Trend by Andreas Clenow and Trend Following With Managed Futures by Greyserman and Kaminiski then you will probably like this book. The writing style is more in-line with the latter than the former.

This book is by no means an easy read and has an academic text feel at times, but I am giving it 5 stars based on the substantive content, the look-behind-the-curtain perspective that the author provides to institutional trading, and the overall value of information provided for the price paid. I also agree with the other reviews that the author's website is a nice bonus.

One of the best trading books of all time

Absolutely the best book I've read to date. I've gone through it 3-4 times now and I'm still uncovering new ideas and information. I'm not sure how anyone could call it simple, as I'm pretty sure most people would have trouble coding this up properly. Luckily, Robert has code examples and even just released the beginnings on a full system framework on his site that includes the very system in the book. Not having binary(in or out) entries and exits was definitely eye opening, in addition to combining multiple signals to get a forecast and using account volatility to aid in position sizing. It's the perfect book for everyone who has done some research and started their foray into quant trading but doesn't know where to go next and wants to know what level the big guys are playing at. I can't recommend it enough.

Oh, and to the guy who says there is no good info or rules. I'm pretty sure he gives you a FULL system in the book that is at least a bit similar(if not very) to something they were or are trading at AHL, one of the largest and most successful hedgefunds of all time. Can lead a horse to water I guess...

In-depth Review of Rule-Based Non-Emotional Trading Methods

The book is best suited to self-directed traders/investors and individuals who are mathematically inclined and who are looking for a systematic rule-based methodology to manage their money while eliminating the emotional component of the equation. The author provides methods for three trader types: asset-allocators, semi-automatic traders comfortable with leverage and derivatives, and staunch systems traders using trading rules. Readers need to understand that they need to have adequate time available to develop and then back-test a rule-based approach. This book provides everything needed to develop a sound trading approach.

Over the course of 300 pages, Carver divides the text into four-parts consisting of detailed explanations of how to set up a systematic trading system covering first the theory behind it, then how to use the toolbox safely, followed by the specific framework to use, and lastly the practice needed to make it work effectively.

As the author illustrates, developing a profitable trading system is not a simple task that can be completed in a couple of hours. It is a time-consuming learning process containing critical elements that must be weaved together, tested, and then tried out in real-time. It is not for the faint of heart or those that give up easily because of the time commitment. Above all, it is necessary to spend the time to develop an objective trading system that will work well going forward, not just back-test very well.

Carver believes that one of the keys to making money in the markets is to avoid mistakes such as making your trading system to complex, being overly optimistic concerning likely returns, taking unnecessary risks, and trading too frequently.

Most of the chapters begin with a short summary, then use examples, charts, tables, and explanations to bring home the key points. All the key components and concepts of developing a systematic trading system are explored including: trading rule development, position sizing, forecasting, risk management, Sharpe ratios, skew, standard deviation, volatility, back-testing and over-fitting, asset allocation, correlation, curve fitting, and much more. Additionally, there is an appendix that contains useful resources – books and data sources, as well as a nine-page glossary of terms. Readers can also download a complimentary copy of the eBook edition.

Individuals who are serious about developing a personalized systematic trading approach will find this book to be a complete guide to the subject matter with unique insights of the author. He was previously a portfolio manager for a large systematic-oriented hedge fund, who now trades his own money in the futures and equities markets.
