Frantz Fanon: A Life, by David Macey

Frantz Fanon (1925-61), author of "The Wretched of the Earth", was one of the great figures of the Third World revolutions of the 1950s and 1960s. His angry and eloquent writings on race, racism, psychiatry and anti-colonialism are still of fierce relevance. In the form of "post-colonial studies", his work has become respectable in the academies of the developed world. Born in Martinique, Fanon trained as a psychiatrist in metropolitan France before taking up a post in colonial Algeria. Here, he came into contact with the Front de Liberation National, which was fighting a bitter war of independence. Forced to flee Algeria when he resigned his post, Fanon subsequently worked with the FLN as a propagandist and ambassador, but also continued to work as a psychiatrist. Fanon died of leukaemia in Washington, aged 36. Based on extensive research, this biography aims to go beyond the myths that have grown up around the revolutionary hero and reveals Fanon to be a complex figure, infinitely more interesting than the theorist of anti-colonial violence celebrated by the left in the 1960s.

From Publishers Weekly
Macey (Lacan in Context), British translator, biographer and critic, is one of the foremost English-language chroniclers of the distinctive postwar French hybrids of psychological, political and historical thought. His Lives of Michel Foucault is so far the definitive biographical study of the prodigious thinker, and this biography of a fervent anti-colonialist revolutionary may be even more important for the role it could play in bringing Fanon's writings out of the American academy and back into common discussion. Fanon (1925-1961) was a native of Martinique, more than 10 years the junior of the radical "negritude" poet (and current mayor of Fort-de-France) Aim‚ C‚saire, who was one of his high school teachers. By the time Fanon's brilliant, blistering diatribe Black Skin, White Masks appeared from a Paris publisher in 1952, Fanon was a psychiatrist; he had been part of a Moroccan-based resistance unit during the war, and had found the white left irredeemably bigoted. (Fanon described the book as a study in "language and aggressivity.") Fanon's colossal shifts of registers (political, medical, poetic, sociological) in the book's phenomenology of racism are well explicated by Macey, who gives nuanced accounts of the African nationalist essays and books that followed (primarily concerning Algeria, where Fanon practiced), and complicates Fanon's advocacy of violence-as-catharsis one of the facets of his work that attracted the radical American left of the '60s. Macey does a terrific job throughout reconstructing the contexts in which Fanon conceived and wrote his works, and the terms with which one might best approach them. The book will be invaluable to scholars, but those looking for an entr‚e into postwar Francophone literature and its political militancy will find this book an excellent guide to notoriously thorny works, and to their author, who died of cancer soon after his illness was discovered.

From Library Journal
In the first biography in some time, Macey (The Lives of Michel Foucault) offers a sensitive and powerful account of Frantz Fanon, the revolutionary, psychiatrist, Third World theorist, and author (The Wretched of the Earth). Fanon's call for violent revolution, as a means of countering colonialism's institutional and psychological effects on colonized peoples, fueled the Algerian Independence movement and set the stage for decolonization in the rest of colonial Africa and the Caribbean. Macey combines original research and other people's scholarship to reveal Fanon's interwoven theories on African decolonization, the War of Algerian Independence, and the lived experience of blacks. Inextricably linked to Fanon's theories and skillfully intertwined is the history of French colonialism and racism in France. Macey's writing and research is rich with historical context and personal information that both Fanon loyalists and general readers will appreciate. Macey details Fanon's Martinique childhood, military service, educational and professional experiences, activism, and writing life. Recommended for academic libraries as well as African history and black studies collections. Sherri Barnes, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara

From Booklist
Fanon is most often associated with the turbulent 1960s as a theorist of anticolonial violence and a figure celebrated by those of left-leaning politics. Macey reveals Fanon as a complex, reflective individual of cross-generational and cross-cultural identification and experience, a man of much richer texture than portrayed from the perspectives of either the French left or American black nationalists. Fanon was born in 1925 in Martinique and trained in France as a psychiatrist. He became head of a psychiatric hospital in colonial Algeria, where he subsequently became associated with the struggle for liberation from France. Through research and interviews with Fanon, Macey conveys the complexity of a man whose range exceeded that of his image as a heroic revolutionary figure. Fanon's famous writings, The Wretched of the Earth and Black Skin, White Mask, reflect the impact of French colonialism in North Africa and the Caribbean. But it is through Fanon's work in psychiatry that Macey reveals a complex individual and work product that has gained increasing recognition in post-colonial studies in academia. Vernon Ford

Fascinating!
By Justice
This book, though enormous, was an easy and entertaining read. I have really only one objection. The book was a great history book but there weren't enough details about Fanon the man. I do think that historical contextualization is essential in biographies and in fact they're one of my favorite ways to learn history.

However, you do expect to read a narrative of someone's life, whereas most of the time, I was reading a history of the Algerian Revolution. Which I wanted to anyway and have no problem with, that's just not what I thought I was getting into. I was greatly moved by Fanon's tragic early death and by his humanist ideals, and I think Macey was right to emphasize, as the famous academic Homi Bhabha recently did, that Fanon's advocacy of anti-colonial violence is not the most important or enduring aspect of his legacy. First and foremost Fanon wanted to see a better and more just world, and his unrelenting passion to empower the poorest of the poor-the wretched of the earth-is a justly lasting, powerful, and evocative sentiment.

However, there just wasn't much about him. I didn't learn all that much about him. The details on his personal life or intimate relationships were very scarce. I understand that not many records remain that describe his relationship with his wife or family but when you pick up a biography you expect intimate personal details that help make a person fully human.

If not enough of that exists anymore, then Macey, a talented and sensitive writer, should have called this book an analysis of Fanon's WRITINGS, not his life. Because most of what Macey tells us about Fanon he gets out of Fanon's "Black Skin, White Masks" and his other writings-he provides few interviews and even fewer insights. Maybe it's too late to write that book, but if you want to call this a biography, you have to make it one.

I still recommend the book if you are interested in Fanon's writings and the Algerian Revolution, which I was and am. But if you want to learn about Fanon the man, forget about it. Nothing in the book made me feel as if I knew anything other than Fanon the theorist and revolutionary. You get no sense of any other dimension of him than you would get if you read all his books.

Highly recommended
By Christopher LaMonica
A superb introduction to French colonial thought and literature. For those of you who are interested in understanding the historical context within which this remarkable figure lived, I highly recommend this book. David Macey carefully addresses the various misrepresentations of Fanon, such as that by Hannah Arendt (most of the French of the time and others), who portrayed Fanon as simply being synonomous with violence. Fanon was a much more complex person than that: Driven, highly intelligent, a product of the French educational system, of WWII, of racism, a psychiatrist, a writer, yet born in Martinique and, after accepting a position in Algeria (rather than stay in France or return to Martinique), finds himself embroiled in an anti-France Algerian nationalist movement. The influences on him, his various professional decisions, as well as those that led him to direct involvement in wider African affairs, are carefully considered and documented. The footnotes, bibliography, and index are all much appreciated by this reader.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will surely refer to it again.

In Depth look at the origins of the civil rights movement
By A Customer
Bobby Seale gives virtually sole credit to Fanon's works as inspiration for the organization of the Black Panther Party with Huey Newton. Frantz Fanon led a brief yet complex life fighting racist communist French colonialism in his adopted homeland of Algeria. This biography is not a quick read, and is intended for people that are willing to take their time getting through this 500 page monstrosity. In order to understand the opposite views of African politics through French colonialism during the same time period, reading about Leopold Senghor is an absolute must. Bravo to anyone seriously reading these philosophies! It's uncanny how much of Fanon's principles still relate to modern politics.

Third book of a great series
By Dakotabob
Lucky Jack was a great character. My only disappointment is that this is probably the last book of a very good series. The book has a number of what I like to call spell check errors. This has plagued all of the books that I have read from this author. With that said, he is quickly becoming my favorite historical fiction writer. This guy can write! I highly recommend this series.

Well, I wondered if it would be, and I wasn't disappointed, the third and last Lucky Jack book in the series, was just as good as the other two. Hated for it to end. But it ended just like I like all books to end, on a very good note! Jack met a woman and almost immediately fell in love. There was promises to return to her when the war was over. Because of all the heroic things Jack and his fellow Wildcats had performed in the two years they had been fighting, plus, they were just exhausted, they were released early to go home. On the way Jack travels to Mary's home to get her so they can be married when they finally reach his home in Charleston. They have a few skirmishes between there and home, but FINALLY reach there safely! He even finds his sister Caitlin in Charleston, singing in a bar. Of course that calls for another skirmish, which I will not go into. Each book is very exciting and holds your interest from beginning to end. Unlike other books, this series does not bog you down with historical facts or the battle scenes. You don't find yourself skipping over those parts, like I have done in other civil war stories. GRIFF Hosker writes his stories so interesting, that even I being a female, understands the battle scenes! I highly recommend man or woman read this series.

Good Read and Excellent End to a Series!
By SmileyH
Very good end to an excellent series where each book stood on its own, but carried through to the completion of the series. The main character was well developed and grew with each book. While telling the story from a Southern View, it was more a human adventure rather than a cause discussion.

Match Made in Wyoming (Wyoming Wildflowers, Book 3), by Patricia McLinn

When fire ravages Wyoming land, fireweed is among the first plants to return, brightening the blighted area with the joy of its blooms. Small-town lawyer Taylor Anne Larsen faces the challenge of doing the same for the pain-ravaged heart and disbelieving soul of ranch foreman Cal Ruskoff. Armed with the same grace and grit as the wildflower fireweed, Taylor also has allies – a matchmaking friend, a harsh western blizzard, high-octane mutual attraction, and a rescued puppy who slips past the defenses of this tough cowboy.
While they're snowbound together, Cal might give in to passion temporarily, but from behind the wall he's built around his past and his secrets, he's certain Taylor is all that he can't let himself have. And he'll use all his weapons to keep her out.

"These characters -- their dialogue, their fears, their complex personalities -- are very real. As a reader, I couldn't help fall under Cal's spell -- a good, troubled, mixed-up man who forces Taylor to confront some of her own demons, even as he refuses to face his own . . . There's a lot of subtle -- and not so subtle -- humor here, the love scenes are at once tender and sizzling, and the emotions and fears of both characters wrap themselves around the reader's heart and don't let go." – Karen Templeton, Amazon review

"Page turner, cute, funny. Can't wait to get the next in line" - 5*

"This is a great western story and would recommend you to read it. The author has great stories and I haven't found one of her books I don't like." - 5*

Wildflowers have to be strong and resilient to bloom amid the rugged western beauty of Wyoming - and so do the women.

Another Wyoming Winner!
By Holly F
Cal Ruskoff might work out on the wide open spaces of Matty's ranch (heroine from Almost a Bride), but he's built a wall around himself that no one can quite breach. At least not until a snowstorm forces Taylor Larson to stay at the ranch. She thinks she's making a hole in this tough man's armor, but in the end, she finds she's simply knocking her head against a brick wall. Cal isn't ready for a relationship, and Taylor is settling for anything less.
In Match Made in Wyoming, Patricia McLinn crafts two people with painful pasts who find a brilliant future together in this second book of her Wyoming Wildflower series!

a 5 star series
By txbookworm
When I read the first book in this series, Almost A Bride, I could not believe the quality of depth this author gave her characters. I quickly purchased Match Made in Wyoming and was delighted to find it was even better than the first book.

If you are a die-hard fan of western romance at its finest, a sample of Ms. McLinn's writing will leave you scrambling for all her works. Her books had me laughing one minute, teary-eyed the next and dreading the last page to arrive. She has a rare talent of whisking you into the lives of her characters with such clarity that you feel you are actually there...and you don't want it to end.

Good, old -ashioned heartwarming romance!
By Karen Templeton
Small town lawyer Taylor Larsen is everything ranch foreman Cal Ruskin doesn't want to want. . .and everything he needs, even though he's convinced himself the secrets he keeps buried deep in his soul preclude his ever being able to love this warm, generous woman the way she deserves to be loved. But when a mutual friend, a scrawny, abandoned Collie puppy, and a perfectly timed Montana blizzard conspire to throw Cal and Taylor together for a very cozy three days in a very small house, Cal cannot resist at least sampling what life with Taylor could be like. . .and Taylor cannot resist prying apart the shell that Cal keeps clamping around him whenever she gets too close.
This story is remarkable on many levels, not the least of which is the skill with which Miss McLinn tells it. You may think you've read every ranch/cowboy/snowbound story out there, but trust me -- this one is not only different, but proves, without a doubt, that some of the best writing around is to be found in category romance. These characters -- their dialogue, their fears, their complex personalities -- are very real. As a reader, I couldn't help fall under Cal's spell -- a good, troubled, mixed-up man who forces Taylor to confront some of her own demons, even as he refuses to face his own -- even as I completely empathized with Taylor's frustration every time Cal retreated into his cave, as well as her determination not to let him get away with it! There's a lot of subtle -- and not so subtle -- humor here, the lovescenes are at once tender and sizzling, and the emotions and fears of both characters wrap themselves around the reader's heart and don't let go. This is one of those rare books -- for me, anyway - - whose characters truly stay with you long after the final page. A keeper for sure!

Phenomenological Interpretation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (Studies in Continental Thought), by Martin Heidegger

The text of Martin Heidegger’s 1927–28 university lecture course on Emmanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason presents a close interpretive reading of the first two parts of this masterpiece of modern philosophy. In this course, Heidegger continues the task he enunciated in Being and Time as the problem of dismatling the history of ontology, using temporality as a clue. Within this context the relation between philosophy, ontology, and fundamental ontology is shown to be rooted in the genesis of the modern mathematical sciences. Heidegger demonstrates that objectification of beings as beings is inseparable from knowledge a priori, the central problem of Kant’s Critique. He concludes that objectification rests on the productive power of imagination, a process that involves temporality, which is the basic constitution of humans as beings.

Kantbuch before the fact
By steven schwartzbard
A lecture course that eventually became the famous Kantbuch, Heidegger demonstrates his remarkable capacity to think in complete sentences. The reading of Kant is decidedly Aristotlizing, with the priority of the imagination (phantasia) over reason (nous) or sense (aisthesis), and the priority of imagination cannot be separated from the priority of time, the gift which is self giving (or in Kant, self-affection: masturbation). The most clever thing that H does, and which he refrains from in the Kantbuch, is to turn the categories (quantity, quality, modality, and something else) into emanations of past, present, future. H reads modern philosophy as the triumph of the imagination, and that is no clearer than in Kant, but for Heidegger, the future possesses a priority, and the future is "image-poor." The connection of imagination with manipulation (and potentiality) leads some (like Sartre) to identify imagination with negativity, but H wants no part of this "humanism." Imagination and time may possess a priority that Kant "recoils" from, but H demonstrates the reductio in Kant's argument not to valorize imagination but ironically to resuscitate aisthesis, or the potentia passiva, the ability or power to receive, to listen intently, or just to listen.

The Divine Flood: Ibrahim Niasse and the Roots of a Twentieth-Century Sufi Revival, by Rudiger Seesemann

Until recently, academic studies of Sufism have largely ignored the multiple ways in which Islamic mystical ideas and practices have developed in the modern period. For many specialists, Sufism was "on the way out" and not compatible with modernity. The present study of a twentieth-century Sufi revival in West Africa offers critical corrections to this misconception. Seesemann's work revolves around the emergence and spread of the "Community of the Divine Flood," established in 1929 by Ibrahim Niasse, a leader of the Tijaniyya Sufi order from Senegal. Based on a wide variety of written sources and encounters with leaders and ordinary members of the movement, the book analyzes the teachings and practices of this community, most notably those concerned with mystical knowledge of God. It presents a vivid and intimate portrait of the community's formation in Senegal and its subsequent transformation into a veritable transnational movement in West Africa and beyond. Drawing on letters, poetry, hagiography, and testimonies of opponents of the movement, the book traces Niasse's spectacular ascension as the widely acclaimed "Supreme Saint of His Era" and shows how the various stages of his career intersect with the development of his mystical teachings. Seesemann makes a compelling case for studying Sufis and their literary production in their social and historical contexts, throwing light on a little known chapter of the intellectual and social history of Islam.

Review

"Based on a meticulous analysis of the relevant literature in both Arabic and European languages, The Divine Flood traces the appeal of the Sufi message brought by Ibrahim Niasse from its doctrinal origins to its reception in the popular imagination. Few books provide such balanced insight into the inner dynamics of an expansive Muslim movement in sub-Saharan Africa."
-- Louis Brenner, Emeritus Professor of the History of Religion in Africa, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

"Seesemann provides a truly remarkable portrait of a major Muslim scholar presenting a significant case study within the broad framework of Islamic spirituality in the twentieth century. The volume is based on a familiarity with both archival and analytical sources, extensive interviews, and the literary resources of the spiritual traditions of Ibrahim Niasse. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the continuing dynamism of religion in the contemporary world."
-- John Voll, professor of Islamic history and associate director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University

"The Divine Flood succeeds brilliantly in providing a textured and highly engaging account of the emergence of Ibrahim Niasse as the most influential Tijani Sufi leader in West Africa in the mid-twentieth-century. Seesemann's research is expansive, imaginative, and incisive, and his superb book is sure to become a model study for the social construction of Sufi sainthood and Muslim identity."
--Ahmet T. Karamustafa, Professor of History & Religious Studies, Washington University in St. Louis.

"The Divine Flood is both ahead of its time and past due. . . . . RĂ¼diger Seesemann is to be applauded and encouraged for selecting Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse as the paradigm for the success and continuity of Islamic scholarship and spiritual cohesiveness. His expertise is not lost in turgid terminology and yet still carries the weight of over a decade of personalised experience and study. It is hoped that further research on Islam in Africa and specifically the components of the Jama'at al-fayda will be given the proper due and investigation in the same fashion as Seesemann's masterful work here."--FLOODPLAINS® blog

The Serpent's Tale: Snakes in Folklore and LiteratureFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

“We travel the world,” writes Gregory McNamee, “and wherever we go there are snake stories to entertain us.” Here are some fifty diverse and unusual accounts of serpents from cultures across time and around the globe: snakes that talk, jump, and dance; snakes that transform into other creatures; snakes that just . . . watch.

Many selections are drawn from the rich oral traditions of peoples in every clime that supports reptiles, from the Akimel O’odham of North America to the Mensa Bet-Abrahe of Africa to the Mungkjan of Australia. Included as well are such writings as prayers from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, a poem by Emily Dickinson, and a journal entry by Charles Darwin.

What we read about snakes in The Serpent’s Tale is just as fascinating for what it says about us, for there always will be something primordial about our connection to them. That bond is evident in these stories: in how we associate snakes with nature’s elemental forces, how we attribute special qualities to their eyes and skin, and how they preside over all phases of our existence, from creation to death to resurrection.
