About the Author

Dr. Bruce M. Whitehead is a NAESP Nationally Distinguished Principal and has served for over thirty years as a principal for School District # 4 in Missoula, Montana. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Montana. His career includes appointments to numerous national and international committees as well as becoming President of the Montana Association of Elementary School Principals and the Montana State Reading Association. He also served as Chairman of Montana’s first Governor’s Task Force on Technology as well as being an NCATE Advisor. As a co-author of 10 books and numerous articles in the field of education, Dr. Whitehead is a recipient of the University of Montana’s highest honor, The Montana Distinguished Alumni Award. Additional honors include: The International Reading Association’s Presidential Service Award, NASA Explorer Schools Leadership Award, National Milken Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award, John F. Kennedy Center’s Award for Arts in Education, Outstanding Contributions to Saudi Arabian Education, and Japan’s International Soroban Institute Award.

Dr. Floyd Boschee has an extensive background in teaching and educational administration. He served as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the public schools and as a professor and chairman of departments of education at the collegiate level. Dr. Boschee is professor emeritus in the Division of Educational Administration, School of Education, at the University of South Dakota and a former school board member of the Vermillion School District, Vermillion, South Dakota. During his tenure as a university professor, he consulted with school districts on reorganization; published numerous articles in major educational journals; and conducted workshops on curriculum development and implementation, the teaching and learning process, and school administrator evaluations. He is the author or coauthor of 13 books in the fields of school administration and curriculum and instruction.

Good Book

A good all-in-one reference manual (of sorts) for people interested in integrating technology into their curriculum, district, or even just their lessons. The only drawback is that, like many things tech related, portions of this book will soon be out of date. An online companion reference that could be continuously updated would have been good.

Williams's reading lacks the rage that moved Crawford's Mildred, but her version of the now-familiar story amplifies our sense of Cain's heroine as an abandoned woman who finds her own way, on her own terms. I finished this book in less than 24 hours

I don't know quite where to start when writing a review of this book. Even though I had seen the movie and so knew more or less how the story would unfold (or thought I did), I still couldn't put the book down. The Washington Post said that "James M. Cain is the poet of the hard-boiled school of the American novel," and that compliment is well deserved. I was immediately drawn into the story and stayed completely absorbed until the last page. As others have mentioned, the book is much darker than the movie, and more complex as well. I went back and read the last chapter over a few times just to savor the ending again. The first time it was so startling that I couldn't quite believe what I had read. This is just one example of the power of Cain's writing. It's simply remarkable.

a mother's love is blind..

Mildred Pierce is one of those 'tough as nails, heart of gold' mothers who should an inspiration to all women. She kicks out her dead-beat husband, works her tail off to keep food on the table and her daughters happy, and has the guts/brains to start her own successful business. So what's wrong (and why did James M. Cain bother to write about her)?
Unable to face reality, Mildred is the victim of her own blindness to her rotten eldest daughter's ways. Not only is her daughter unappreciative, she actually ridicules her mother as being some uncouth and ignorant embarassment. Mildred's toughness melts when confronting her monster daughter, much to her detriment. While a heartbreaking story overall, the ending is especially moving ... have your hankies ready.
Perhaps many folks reading this review has seen the famous film adaption (starring Joan Crawford) of Mildred Pierce. While the film generally carries the intent of James M. Cain's written word, there are several differences. Obviously Hollywood wanted to over-dramatize, or simply invent scenes. As much as I like the movie I enjoyed the book more; I found it to be more personal , intense and believable.
Bottom line: required reading by all mothers, strongly recommended to everyone else.

I recently read Calvin Trillin's Feeding a Yen. Exotic Appetites is the brainiac version. Although this seems to be intended as an academic work, it is sprinkled with personal anecdotes and references from popular culture. This makes it readable for anyone interested in food.

Heldke considers food from every angle. What is exotic food? Is food that is exotic to one person or culture exotic to another? When does it stop being exotic? (Pizza used to be considered exotic in America.) How do we change food when we take it out of its "native habitat"? Do we somehow endanger it?

With references to Calvin Trillin, Wayne's World, Sara Paretsky, Pierre Bourdieu, Tony Hillerman, and Jane & Michael Stern, among others, this is a wide-ranging look at food adventuring. Try it!

Fatty! Big Nose! Squirt!

Mr. Rude is not just very rude, he is "extraordinarily rude!" If he sees someone with a big nose, he will tell them. If he sees someone that is overweight, he calls them "Fatty" along with making a very disrespectful comment! Mr. Rude does not have a Welcome Mat! No, he has crossed that out and written "GO AWAY" so you can imagine how mad he is when Mr. Happy, after witnessing Mr. Rude's behavior, comes to visit.

No matter how much Mr. Rude rants and rages, Mr. Happy just sits there smiling at him. How long does Mr. Happy stay? What does Mr. Rude discover he has by the end? You'll have to read the book to find out but let me tell you that this is a GREAT book for showing children how not to behave. When they slip up and find themselves being rude, reminding them of the story will bring a smile and hopefully a change of attitude pretty pronto!

We love them and will buy the whole collection

My dad bought me one of these books every time he went out of town on business. I loved them then, and I read them now to my 5-year-old. It is so fun to collect all of the books and they are very reasonable. They are also adorable stories with cute, useful morals. We love the art in the books and try to draw our own pictures later. My son absolutely loves these books as a fast, entertaining read each night. We will buy them all. ;)

This Kriya Yoga teaches Patience

Right up front, if you are a Kriyaban or interested in this type of Yoga, you want this book. It has good information about the practices and the author is familiar with some of the divergent paths it has taken from Sri Shyama Charan Lahiri Mahasaya's many disciples. He also explains the deeper techniques and enhancements that the Kriyaban eventually practices. But there are drawbacks; it is from India and has those familiar "issues": there are misspelled words, missing spaces between some words, faulty English. For example he sometimes writes "unhurt" instead of "unstruck" or "if" when he means "of" and so on. The beginning of the book is long and tedious to my temperament. In some places, well, several places, he employs copious Sanskrit words throughout the sentences so that it is a chore to just understand what he is saying. I am sure it is fine for the Sanskrit scholar but ... . Yet there are some true gems to be found here. He also goes into good depth regarding some of the experiences one has as they pursue the deeper and more elaborate techniques. I do feel he is not clear enough in explaining some of those techniques but if you already know them or a version of them, you can work it out. There is considerable depth here in understanding the theory behind the techniques. No doubt there are some answers here that have been left out in other sources of this blessed gift of Kriya Yoga.

He who knows not and knows he knows not; educate him.

I like this author he has done what he thinks is best, but sadly this scholarly work is not the Original Kriya Yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya at all.

The Swami also knows this and believes what he has learned is satisfying and also knows that up till now it was impossible to learn the Original Kriya Yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya.

Dear Swamaji, please take a look at Ennio Nimis Website Kriyayogainfo dot net and there you will discover a startling announcement and perhaps have the opportunity yourself to learn the real Kriya Yoga.

After you have learned from an actual Guru from the Swami Pranabananda lineage perhaps you will put out volume two of this scholarly work which I have enjoyed.

Tedious ,too many sanscrit words all over with a Indian flavor translation in english

I was not satisfied with the kryia lessons-techniques given by SRF. Got this book:346 pages: will get some detailed information there!!!! like most of books written by Indians,their english is quite particular. Plus,Swiami Nityananda showers readers with sanskrit words all over, which is annoying to me. I do not get the point of it... perhaps he wants to convince somebody of the authenticity of the source? "tamosadhirdadhire garhamrtviyam tamapo aghim janayanta"..ectect. meaning..."the water or rain gives birth to the fire like a mother." (p.18) If you like this type of explanation, this book is for you... if not,perhaps "Kryia secrets revealed" by Stevens is more for the westeners...If like me, you want to get to a decent kryia lesson, bare with this book,,,,kryia practice chapter starts at page 249,ends at page 341. You will get sanscrit words in the mist of it. Good for concentration and trying to follow the author's train of thought!!!!!!

About the Author
Lloyd Antypowich has gone into the mountains and hunted since he was a young man. He says, Just to sit in the Cathedral of Nature, to look and listen is my church, and to sit on top of an eight-thousand-foot mountain and look down on the creator s handiwork is like having him sitting beside me, charging up my batteries. He learned to love the outdoors and appreciate the skills of being a hunter from his father s knee, a man who hunted for survival to provide meat for his family. Today, he lives in Horsefly, B.C., Canada. It s an hour drive to the heart of the mountains, but they are within view from his living room window. Now he is retired and hunts fish on his boat on Quesnel Lake, which is nestled in the heart of the mountains.

It's an amazing tribute to nature

I have never hunted, but I am a passionate environmentalist, who loves hiking and camping. As such I have to say `A Hunting We Did Go' is an amazing book. The author Lloyd Antypowich is not only an expert hunter but he loves what he does passionately. His love radiates from every page. I could so visualize his paradise, e.g. when Lloyd shares:

"...Grizzly Valley has an abundance of juniper and in the fall of the year grizzly feed on juniper berries. As we rode along I was enjoying the beautiful scenery. The colors seemed to blend so well. There were so many different colored bushes and small trees and the valley was a splendid example of the handy work of Mother Nature. No pictures or words can really explain just how beautiful it can be in the high country..."

That brings me to another reason why I loved reading this book. Even though I am a savvy camper (and a former girl scout troop leader) somehow I am not sure that a "greenhorn" like me could do a hiking trip like that. What would I do if I encountered a grizzly? Lloyd encounters a big one... a sort of stare-down with reaching an understanding follows. I loved reading the passage about "second chances" but won't give away spoilers here. What a neat thing that I got to read Lloyd's book instead of having to figure out what I would do.

Lloyd's hunting stories are stories of fairness. Though expert hunters seem to have so many technical advantages, hunting is not as easy as it sounds. The story "Never try to out run a caribou" eludes to that.

Lloyd Antypovich describes a special world of beautiful nature, animals, cool hunting cabins, and great friendships. I was very sad to read about the passing of his friend Leo, who also loved fishing like I do. I was ridiculous impressed (and slightly jealous) with the picture of the 12-lb Lake Trout the author caught at Quesnel Lake.

5 stars for `A Hunting We Did Go'. The stories and many fabulous pictures touched my heart. In fact, ever since I have my new Kindle this was the first book I downloaded to my computer just so I could see the many wonderful pictures on my 20x13" screen. I truly hope that as many people as possible (especially politicians) read these beautiful stories so they can "feel" why we have to protect these amazing natural habitats. Thank you, Lloyd, for giving me the opportunity to feel along with what it is really like to be one-on-one with nature.
