Enlightening and entertaining

I simply love this book. I was twelve when I first read it and dogeared and yellow as it is, it never leaves my bedside table to this day. It is also my heavy-duty travel companion for it is laden with interesting anecdotes of the crème de la crème artists of the turn of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth. Misia was the daughter of a Polish sculptor and grew up in haute bourgeoisie Paris. Through her different marriages to the editor of an influential art magazine, a media mogul and a Spanish painter, she had the chance to hobnob with the likes of Verlaine, Mallarmé, Débussy, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Vuillard, Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Satie, Picasso, Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, Pierre Reverdy or Coco Chanel. Try reading it before you undertake your next trip to Paris or while you listen to Débussy's Faune or Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It'll give you new insights on your next visit to the Musée D'Orsay. Excellent ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AN AMAZING WOMAN

Misia Sert was more than a muse to many painters and musicians. Because of her knowledge and impeccable taste, she recognized talent and artistic merit long before many others. In addition to being an inspiration, Sert also had the money to support them, which she generously did. The authors do an excellent job of portraying not only her mutli-faceted personality but also the exciting times in which she lived.

Igor Milovanovic

Igor Milovanovic is an experienced developer, with strong background in Linux system knowledge and software engineering education, he is skilled in building scalable data-driven distributed software rich systems. Evangelist for high-quality systems design who holds strong interests in software architecture and development methodologies, Igor is always persistent on advocating methodologies which promote high-quality software, such as test-driven development, one-step builds and continuous integration. Dimitry Foures

Dimitry Foures is a data scientist with a background in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. After completing his undergraduate studies in physics at ENS Lyon (France), he studied fluid mechanics at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris where he obtained a first class master's. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Cambridge. He currently works as a data scientist for a smart-energy startup in Cambridge, in close collaboration with the university.

Giuseppe Vettigli is a data scientist who has worked in the research industry and academia for many years. His work is focused on the development of machine learning models and applications to use information from structured and unstructured data. A good guide to get the basics right in visualisation in Python

What I liked about this book was that it gives clear and short examples of various visualization techniques in Python. It dives right in without much fluff, while it is still easy to follow.

A strong point is the second chapter which shows how to import and prepare various types of input data.

The book focusses mostly on statistical type visuals such as bars and histograms. I expected the book to cover a larger number of visuals and go beyond the basic statistical visuals. For example, I hoped it would also discuss heatmaps, network graphs, treemaps and starplots.

The book discusses a number of Python frameworks, but could have included some more for example Bokeh or Python-Igraph.

What it discusses, it discusses well. Therefore I give it four stars.

This is a great book!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review. I think this is a great book. The examples for the different plotting methods and customizations all worked. The first chapter describe set-up and code samples for using data in different formats. I remember when I was first given the task to add a chart to a report to represent data and how it took me a minute to ensure I was doing things correctly. This book would helped me a great deal at that time. Many questions I had previously about plotting and correctly coding solutions for charts I haven't been asked to make yet, were answered. I have been creating reports and charts for a University Research team and this book has been a godsend. I think this book would have helped me when I was working using java for reports and charts. I just this is a great book.

It presents not a mere description of Python packages and commands related to visualization, but embeds these tools into real-world scenarios. Not only visualization itself but also data manipulation enabling insightful visualization are discussed in detail. The Best Book in Its Class!

When I stumbled across the book "Make Difficult People Disappear", I was hoping it was a "how-to" manual, but alas, it was not to be. I've read many books in this genre, but none has so grabbed my attention, so fast! The Authors' style draws one right into the story in a way few books do. As you read of Cybil's journey, you begin a slow, but impactful series of Ah-ha moments. The way Ms. Wofford skillfully guides the reader to the key points while using humor and just plain old fun, makes this a joy to read. I get the feel from the way this is written, that it is a message the author passionately believes. I have now read this book through twice. I've given away my copy and am buying at least a dozen more to give to those I know, that will appreciate and benefit from this book. If you haven't guessed by now, I have a very strong opinion about this work. I see it ending up in the "Think and Grow Rich" category of classic "change your thinking" style of books. I strongly recommend this book, especially if most of the people in your life are indeed difficult and you would like them to disappear.

Great Clues for Better Relationships Abound in This Book

About Monica's new book: The story really hits the mark in terms of achieving a way to communicate the value of what you (aka the trainer) do for people in organizations. I learned to care about the characters as I read through it. I especially wanted to know if Cybil could shift and how, especially given that her husband is a Relater. Monica's narrative took me through that journey and delivered a satisfying and believable ending.

I'm predominantly a Relater (other categories tied with 3 checkmarks each in the easy-to-complete test), which is another reason the book resonated with me. I found it to be a truly enjoyable experience in giving words to human behavior and practical clues for better relationships.

Clear, well-written, fun to read, insightfully valuable.

Great insight into how well dogs understand their special humans

FABULOUS book. Gregory Berns got the crazy idea of training his dog to lie still in an MRI machine in the hope it would provide some insight into dogs' thinking. What he found brings scientific proof to something every dog person knows --- that dogs read us, anticipate our behavior, and act on that knowledge. Dogs, in short, have theory of mind. Berns rightly argues that this scientific evidence must change the way we think of and treat dogs.
His book is filled with fairly complex scientific concepts but it is written beautifully and clearly. It is very easy to understand and, like a good adventure novel, pulls readers along with foreshadowing and suspense. I disagree with the reviewer who said the book is written "backwards." I really wanted to know how the idea developed, how the training was done, all the background stuff in the early chapters.
I love that Berns is not an especially savvy dog person, at least at the beginning of the Dog Project, as he calls it. That makes it all the more sweet when he recognizes how hard dogs try to communicate with and understand humans. I have enormous respect for Berns and his team's commitment to ensuring that the dogs were willing, even eager, participants in every step. I especially enjoyed the long discussion of the ethical issues he faced in setting up the research and the insistence of all the human researchers that the dogs would always be free to opt out, at any time.
This book is a testament to what amazing things can be accomplished when humans acknowledge their dogs' abilities, treat them as partners (rather than as property or as slaves) and engage with them in a respectful, positive manner.
This should be required reading for ALL dog lovers. It will be required reading for all of my students at Bergin U, the only place to study the dog-human relationship at the college level.

Written backwards but still great!

First of all, this book is written backwards and clearly comes directly from the mind of a scientist rather than from the heart of a dog lover. An editor's touch in sequencing would have made this book perfect.

Let me explain what I mean by that. The whole first part of the book is an explanation of means and methods. It is a dry read and yet it's information you would want to know, if the findings section of the book left you curious for more.
If you are like me you will skim the first chapters and dig into the later chapters. Then later, once you have finished the actually informative parts of the book, you will go back and read the clinical minutia that led up to it. You will do that because you want to judge the conclusions on the merit of how they were gained. So to sum up that critique, everything that I needed to be here was here. It's only flaw is the presentation. The back of the book should have BEEN the book and the front of the book should have been appendixes, footnotes and back matter explanation.

How many stars should be docked for that? None in my view. I loved this book and am free enough of a thinker to sequence the material for myself.

The bottom line is that every dog lover should read this to affirm the love and respect that they hold for this noble beast...even if you read it out of order.

Readable but, in my opinion, does not ultimately deliver on the title's promise.

Most products are relatively easy to rate on the 5-star Amazon scale. This was not one of those cases. Rating this book was a tough decision.

Why? Well, first, because I am a huge dog lover. My dog and I have a very close bond and my friends often comment on how well my dog and I communicate. So of course I was interested in a book promising to "decode the canine brain" and tell me "How Dogs Love Us."

Despite the heavily scientific content, the book was very readable and well written. There were very few days when I didn't want to pick it up and continue reading it. A book that readable would usually get at least 4 stars from me; so why am I giving this one 3? Largely for these reasons:

1. I felt that the book did not deliver on its title, and did not deliver fully on it's subtitle or elements of its description, including why the "pack leader" theory favored by Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) is the wrong theory to use with dogs.

2. I was frustrated with how much of the book was taken up with the process of training the author's dog, Callie (an adopted terrier mix) and a volunteer's dog, MacKenzie (a purebred Border Collie), to get used to being enclosed in the MRI, enduring the loud noise of the machine and holding still enough to get good brain scans. Yes, I get it--I know these are not things natural to dogs so it will require persistent training. But, in my opinion, way too much time was spent describing every step of this process.

3. The author mentions briefly that, after the initial success of the Dog Project using Callie and McKenzie, he and his team expanded the Project to include multiple other volunteer dogs to see if the results they got from Callie and McKenzie's fMRIs were characteristic of other dogs/breeds. I felt that this part of the Project was given very short shrift. I came away wanting for a broader picture of the entire project and its findings.

4. It may seem a trivial thing, but it bugged me that the dog pictured on the cover of the book is neither of the dogs that participated in the Dog Project. It is, instead, a Golden Retriever, which may or may not represent the author's OTHER dog, Lyra, who did not participate in the Project. Perhaps the Golden is on the cover as homage to Lyra (though that wouldn't have anything to do with the Dog Project, which is the subject of the book); more likely, the Golden is there because it is a very popular breed and would sell more books.

5. The book felt a little disjointed to me. It's not something I can put my finger on, now that I've finished the book, but there were times while reading it when I just felt discombobulated by the sequence of events.

Beyond those issues, I did really like that the author's love for his dogs came through loud and clear. He even elevated them to the level of a human child in regard to the types of permissions he included in his study methodology rather than to treat them the way lab animals are usually treated. I enjoyed reading about his family life, his children and how different members of the family felt closer to one dog while he felt closer to the other.

One final note: Early in the book, while the author is trying to find an appropriate MRI facility that will allow dogs, he talks about animal testing other than his. There are some things in that section of the book that may be disturbing to animal lovers. As I recall, it was mostly in regard to monkeys.

This is an excellent clinical endocrinology reference for veterinary clinicians who manage diverse endocrinopathies. It is written clearly and concisely and covers all pertinent points that veterinary professionals need to take into consideration in the management of clinical endocrine cases. The chapters are written by well-known experts in the field and provide concise summaries of the current literature. (5 stars)

Very recommended book. Very clinical. The second addition is updated with the recent clinical endocrinology knowledge.I have no doubt that Rijnberk and Kooistra are the best Endocrinologists in Veterinary Medicine .
