Common Sense

Nice little book - easy to read and digest. However, Paul's videos on Youtube are much, much better. He has a great personality and a witty presentation style. I think I liked the book because I read it after listening to Paul, so I "heard" his voice come through. There's some succinct, practical advice here.

The German plot to send paratroopers into a small village to kidnap/kill Winston Churchill gets new life, thanks to a superb audio rendition. Each character is individually voiced: the devious Himmler, the IRA revolutionary, the young girl whom he romances, the local traitor (female), the German Steiner, who speaks perfect English, the stuffy British nobility, the priest, who is young at the time but returns many years later as a sick old man. Action alternates with pastoral village scenes, sometimes without much pause. This last quibble aside, this is a winner. Golden Oldie - Top WWII thriller

I have recently read a few top ranked novels written in the 1970's and 1980's and enjoyed them all - this is one of the best. It was first published in 1975 and sold 50 million copies across the world. It was also a successful movie, starring Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Robert Duval and achieved a bit of a cult following.

Normally WWII stories are mostly about the Allies - but this one centres on the Germans at a time when it is clear to most that they are losing the war. It also focusses on how a small quiet remote English community reacts when the war is unexpectedly brought to their doorstep.

During one of his temper tantrum brainstorms, Hitler challenges Admiral Canaris (his espionage chief) to capture Winston Churchill. While Canaris tries to forget the challenge, he asks one of his staff to plan a commando raid when he finds that Churchill will be spending a weekend in remote part of Norfolk, very near the coast. Heirich Himmler never forgets and takes over the planning in his normal ruthless and chilling way.

The raiding group is led by a charismatic Lt. Col. Kurt Steiner, the son of a German general and his American wife, and a small group of war hardened but disgraced paratroopers. They are helped by a key IRA operative Liam Devlin and long term local resident but undercover Abwehr agent Joanna Grey.

While the raid starts according to plan it rapidly goes downhill - surprisingly partly because of the humanity of a German soldier who saves a local child from drowning. The normally heartless Devlin is vulnerable when he loses his heart to a local teenager.

Some say that this is Jack Higgins' best book and is in the same league as the classic Frederick Forsyth thriller "The Day of the Jackal". I agree with them.

Great Character Study

The book was fun to read. The plot was intriguing, different, and surprisingly believable. I read the book in 2014. I'm sure the story is as powerful today and will continue to be as when it was written. Though it was a war setting, I thought the author fully developed his characters and demonstrated the inherent humanity in people, regardless of political differences. I thought the soldier, who without thinking, puts his life at risk to save a drowning child of the enemy was a good example. I was like the little boy, wondering why these smart men weren't on the other side. And I was wondering how easily the author had us hoping the enemy was not harmed??

Just okay...nothing great here

I finished this book but there was no WOW factor in it for me. I didn't really care much for the main character and he sort of annoyed me at times. Maybe it is just a cultural thing, but just going on and on about being Irish, to me, it was just enough already. This is the last of this author I would read. Not sure I understand the high rating from other readers as there was no real surprises and it was a bit of a formula read... break out an outline and fill in the blanks. No offense to those in love with this author, I just don't get it.

The kind of distressing book you NEED to read...

Eric Arthur Blair was an important English writer that you probably already know by the pseudonym of George Orwell. He wrote quite a few books, but many believe that his more influential ones were "Animal farm" (1944) and "1984" (1948).In those two books he conveyed, metaphorically and not always obviously, what Soviet Russia meant to him.

I would like to make some comments about the second book, "1984". That book was written near his death, when he was suffering from tuberculosis, what might have had a lot to do with the gloominess that is one of the essential characteristics of "1984". The story is set in London, in a nightmarish 1984 that for Orwell might well have been a possibility, writting as he was many years before that date. Or maybe, he was just trying to warn his contemporaries of the dangers of not opposing the Soviet threat, a threat that involved a new way of life that was in conflict with all that the English held dear.

Orwell tried to depict a totalitarian state, where the truth didn't exist as such, but was merely what the "Big Brother" said it was. Freedom was only total obedience to the Party, and love an alien concept, unless it was love for the Party. The story is told from the point of view of Winston Smith, a functionary of the Ministry of Truth whose work involved the "correction" of all records each time the "Big Brother" decided that the truth had changed. The Party slogan said that "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past", and they applied it constantly by "bringing up to date" the past so as to make it coincide with whatever the Party wanted.

From Winston Smith's point of view, many things that scare us are normal. For example, the omnipresence of the "Big Brother", always watching you, and the "Thought Police" that punishes treacherous thoughts against the Party. The reader feels the inevitability of doom that pervades the book many times, in phrases like "Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you".

Little by little, Winston begins to realize that things are not right, and that they should change. We accompany him in his attempt at subversion, and are unwilling witnesses of what that attempt brings about. This book is marked by hopelessness, but at the same time it is the kind of distressing book we all NEED to read...

Why do we need to read "1984"?. In my opinion, basically for two reasons. To start with, Orwell made in this book many observations that are no more merely fiction, but already things that manage to reduce our freedom. Secondly, and closelly linked to my first reason, this is a book that only gets better with the passing of time, as you can read in it more and more implications. One of Orwell's main reasons for writting this "negative utopia" might have been to warn his readers against communism, but many years after his death and the fall of communism, we can also interpret it as a caution against the excessive power of mass media, or the immoderate power of any government (even those who don't defend communism).

Technological innovation should be at the service of men, and allow them to live better lives, but it can be used against them. I guess that is one of Orwell's lessons, probably the most important one. All in all, I think you can benefit from reading this book. Because of that, I highly recommend it to you :)

Big Brother is watching you - read this book and see how!

George Orwell's classic was incredibly visionary. It is hardly fathomable that this book was written in 1948. Things that we take for granted today - cameras everywhere we go, phones being tapped, bodies being scanned for weapons remotely - all of these things were described in graphic detail in Orwell's book.
Now that we have the Internet and people spying on other people w/ webcams and people purposely setting up their own webcams to let others "anonymously" watch them, you can see how this culture can develop into the Orwellian future described in "1984."
If you've heard such phrases as "Big Brother," "Newspeak," and "thought crime" and wondered where these phrases came from, they came from this incredible, vivid and disturbing book.
Winston Smith, the main character of the book is a vibrant, thinking man hiding within the plain mindless behavior he has to go through each day to not be considered a thought criminal. Everything is politically correct, children defy their parents (and are encouraged by the government to do so) and everyone pays constant allegiance to "Big Brother" - the government that watches everyone and knows what everyone is doing at all times - watching you shower, watching you having sex, watching you eat, watching you go to the bathroom and ultimately watching you die.
This is a must-read for everyone.

The History Lesson You Wish you Had

George Orwell's final novel, 1984, was written amidst the anti-communist hysteria of the cold war. But unlike Orwell's other famous political satire, Animal Farm, this novel is filled with bleak cynicism and grim pessimism about the human race. When it was written, 1984 stood as a warning against the dangerous probabilities of communism. And now today, after communism has crumbled with the Berlin Wall; 1984 has come back to tell us a tale of mass media, data mining, and their harrowing consequences.
It's 1984 in London, a city in the new überstate of Oceania, which contains what was once England, Western Europe and North America. Our hero, Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents that contradict current government statements and opinions. Winston begins to remember the past that he has worked so hard to destroy, and turns against The Party. Even Winston's quiet, practically undetectable form of anarchism is dangerous in a world filled with thought police and the omnipresent two-way telescreen. He fears his inevitable capture and punishment, but feels no compulsion to change his ways.
Winston's dismal observations about human nature are accompanied by the hope that good will triumph over evil; a hope that Orwell does not appear to share. The people of Oceania are in the process of stripping down the English language to its bones. Creating Newspeak, which Orwell uses only for examples and ideas which exist only in the novel. The integration of Newspeak into the conversation of the book. One of the new words created is doublethink, the act of believing that two conflicting realities exist. Such as when Winston sees a photograph of a non-person, but must reason that that person does not, nor ever has, existed.

The inspiration for Winston's work ,may have come from Russia. Where Stalin's right-hand man, Trotzky was erased from all tangible records after his dissention from the party. And the fear of telescreens harks back to the days when Stasi bugs were hooked to every bedpost, phone line and light bulb in Eastern Europe.

His reference to Hitler Youth, the Junior Spies, which trains children to keep an eye out for thought criminals- even if they are their parents; provides evidence for Orwell's continuing presence in pop culture. "Where men can't walk, or freely talk, And sons turn their fathers in." is a line from U2's 1993 song titled "The Wanderer".

Orwell assumes that we will pick up on these political allusions. But the average grade 11 student will probably only have a vague understanding of these due to lack of knowledge. It is even less likely that they will pick up on the universality of these happenings, like the fact that people still "disappear" without a trace every day in Latin America.

Overall, however, the book could not have been better written. Orwell has created characters and events that are scarily realistic. Winston's narration brings the reader inside his head, and sympathetic with the cause of the would-be-rebels. There are no clear answers in the book, and it's often the reader who has to decide what to believe. But despite a slightly unresolved plot, the book serves its purpose. Orwell wrote this book to raise questions; and the sort of questions he raised have no easy answer. This aspect can make the novel somewhat of a disappointment for someone in search of a light read. But anyone prepared to not just read, but think about a novel, will get a lot out of 1984.

1984, is not a novel for the faint of heart, it is a gruesome, saddening portrait of humanity, with it's pitfalls garishly highlighted. Its historic importance has never been underestimated; and it's reemergence as a political warning for the 21st century makes it deserving of a second look. Winston's world of paranoia and inconsistent realities is an eloquently worded account of a future we thought we buried in our past; but in truth may be waiting just around the corner.

The bright, mischievous product of a Depression-era broken home, Bunker was raised in a worsening succession of institutions. In this account, he initially explores how the violence he experienced in these places directed him toward criminality, culminating in a stretch in San Quentin at age 17. These experiences instilled in Bunker the Convict Code, which boils down to: Don't ever snitch, and respond to all threats with uncompromised ferocity. This ferocity made him notorious among his jailers and peers. Bunker details experiences among pimps, prostitutes, gamblers, thieves and L.A.'s nascent gang and drug culture, plus flirtations with affluent society, in the person of a benefactor, Louise Wallis, a producer's wife for whom he worked as a chauffeur and who nurtured his literary dreams. Having served a total of 18 years in prison, Bunker has made a career out of being an ex-felon in the decades since his release. His four works of fiction (No Beast Too Fierce, Animal Factory, Little Boy Blue, and Dog Eat Dog) describe adolescents in trouble with the law--as he was. This memoir, his first nonfiction book, has stories similar to those in the other volumes, but this time the stories are apparently true. Bunker is sufficiently like the juvenile offenders of today to make his self-revelations hit home. The legal system that he describes, however, goes back several decades. Readers who are interested in how things used to be will find substance here; those who are looking for insights into today's correctional facilities may be misled. Bunker writes well, and his hard-boiled episodes can hold the readers' attention. Devotees will probably like this new volume; others may want to pass.

Bunker, who played the part of "Mr. Blue" in Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, first went to prison in 1950 at the age of 17. By the time his prison career had ended, he had served 18 years in three terms. He had also accumulated a substantial store of prison experience and written several harrowing novels detailing life in California's toughest prisons. In his memoir, Bunker recounts the criminal world that attracted him, beginning with his impoverished youth. In fact, his poverty status earned him the title of "white nigger" by prison personnel, who, accordingly, restricted his privileges. The wife of a major Hollywood producer became his benefactor. But Bunker's initial response was to get drawn deeper into the Hollywood underworld. Through it all, this intelligent though recalcitrant criminal found solace in his writing talent. His memoir reflects the real story behind the fictionalized accounts, including reflections on the racial transitions of the California prison system. When Bunker was initially imprisoned at San Quentin, whites accounted for 70 percent of the population. Upon his release, the ratio of whites to minorities had reversed, substantially changing the prison culture and environment. Vernon Ford

Well done, but not his best work

I'm a huge fan of Bunker's fictional work. _Dog Eat Dog_ is among the the most powerful works of fiction (irrespective of genre) I've ever read.
_Felon_ is relatively comprehensive, describing Bunker's troubled youth and adulthood in a series of increasingly tough institutions; it details his experiences as a student, parolee, fugitive, prisoner and author.
I had two minor bones to pick: in this day and age, a Father effectively abandoning his child to the arms of an institution seems nearly incomprehensible. Perhaps I didn't understand the true motivation, but wished there had been a more suitable explanation for his father's willingness to pawn off his increasingly troubled child to any home that would have him.
I also wished that the book had covered more of Bunker's life in the last twenty-odd years. There was no explanation of Bunker encountering Tarantino or similar events that would seem to be interesting and unique. The book effectively ends with Bunker still in prison, being notified that one of his novels has been accepted by Norton for publication.
Nonetheless, I devoured the entire book in a rush and would recommend it highly. It is a worthwhile description of a complex (if atypical) life.

Good, but troubling

Bunker's definitely a felon, a bad person who has hurt others
throughout his life. But he can write, and he opens a window to a ruthless underground jungle few of us ever see. I sure wouldn't want him as a friend (few have escaped that role unscathed) but the books are compelling. Somewhat reminiscent of Bukowski's self-justifying assault on convention: highly entertaining if taken in the right spirit.

Intelligent

I was impressed by Mr. Bunker's writing skill. Apparently he is the only living author who knows the difference between "trusty" and "trustee".
Some of the writing is self-serving, which is to be expected, but the story as a whole is interesting, intelligent, and informational. I personally resented Mr. Bunker's constant insistence that he was a criminal because the "system" had made him one. He was a criminal because he failed to control his impulses--unless it was in his interest to do so. Even if his upbringing did not include such lessons, his experiences should have taught him that certain actions have certain consequences and it would be a good idea not to keep repeating them.
This was my first in-depth look into a life of crime that I thought was believable. All in all, Mr. Bunker is to be commended for giving readers the opportunity to see inside jails, prisons, reformatories, etc. and the people who inhabit them.

About the Author
Dr. Richard H. Barnett has been instructing in the area of embedded microcontrollers for the past eighteen years and currently consults actively in the field. Dr. Barnett¿s teaching awards include the Charles B. Sarah Cox has a Bachelor of Science degree in both Computer and Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. She is currently the Director of Software Development at Progressive Resources LLC , where she has developed software for projects ranging from small consumer products to industrial products and test equipment. These projects have spanned several fields, among them automotive, medical, entertainment, child development, public safety/education, sound and image compression, and construction. In addition, Ms. Cox has been listed as co-inventor on numerous patent applications.

Senior Operating Member Progressive Resources LLC Mr. O'Cull received a B.S. degree from the School of Electrical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. His career path started in the design of software and control systems for CNC (computer numeric controlled) machine tools. The truth shall make you free. John 8:32

This book is well written and easy to understand. Filled with Scripture and deals with a simple but very confused issue among man made (denominational) churches. To any honest seaker of the truth this book lays it out very well.

My favorite section is the appendix. In it the author deals with the major arguments and "quibbles" that denominational preacher's use to try and overthrow the simple truth of God's word.

I highly recommend this to anyone that wants to learn more about biblical salvation or wants to help others to see New Testament Christianity.

Simple, but not shallow

Bob Myhan's short book (64 pages) is designed to emphasize the simplicity of Bible teaching about the subject. There are no complicated analyses of Greek words although there are helpful definitions. Each chapter is a brief article containing a straightforward study of a pertinent text or concept. Sometimes Myhan analyzes contrasting points of view regarding those texts.

The author's preface and the forward by Bill Hall are both thought-provoking reads. There is also a group of five somewhat deeper but still understandable articles that form a substantial appendix. Those articles deal with infant baptism, Holy Spirit baptism, salvation by grace through faith, righteousness in the book of Romans and the operation of the Holy Spirit in salvation.

I recommend this book especially to give to those who are considering obedience in baptism but who have been confused by the smoke blown on the issue by religious traditions that underemphasize its importance. It can also help more advanced students learn of some effective approaches that might help others to deal with this issue.

A Treatise On Baptism

Bob's treatment of this subject (water baptism) is very thorough and addresses much of the confusion that exists in the religious world concerning the meaning and purpose of baptism. He explores key passages that clearly teach water baptism as an important part of God's plan for salvation....just as important as belief, repentance, and devotion to Christ's teachings. I grew up in the baptist church and was told that baptism was not essential to salvation. I was taught told that it was only an outward sign of an inward faith that had already saved me. Bob shows from the Scriptures that we enter Christ's church at the point of baptism. He shows from the text that our sins are not forgiven until we submit to being baptism. In baptism, we call on the Lord's name to forgive our sins. I highly recommend this short book to anyone studying the subject of baptism. Because Christ and the apostles commanded it, its a very important subject!
