Good inro to O&P for physical therapy students and practicing PTs

I like this book as it is a great introduction to the sciences of orthotics & prosthetics (O&P). It is a fairly easy read yet covers most essential elements of O&P devices and applications in rehabilitation. Chapter 2 is a very useful and succinct introduction to biomechanics as it relates to O&P. I use this text as required readings for DPT and PTA classes that I teach and encourage other professors interested in O&P sciences to use it as a reference. I feel that it covers most of the foundational concepts of O&P and it seems to help provide students with the practical knowledge of what they will need in practice.

O&P students may find the case study approach of the text useful, but it is not as in-depth as texts like Orthotics and Prosthetics in Rehabilitation, 2e which is an excellent text.

Practicing ortho-prosthetists will appreciate the section on "Teaching Prosthetic Control" in chapter 7. This makes a good reference for your PT colleagues.

Overall a good book, well illustrated, authors have command of the subject material, and the editors only missed two instances of the dreaded so-called word "componentry". But then...I call it O&P and not P&O.

An essential document; an impressive value

If you are into the underground/extreme metal scene of the 80's through the early 2000's, this book is for you. This is a huge book. If you were to actually read every word in it, I'd have to conclude you were either insane or had a lot of time on your hands. Either way, hats off to you, because there is just so much content in this book. I wish I had the time, but I have no regrets from my purchase.

As you can read from the description and table of contents, the foundation of this book is a reprinting of the full contents of several years worth of a metal zine called Slayer Mag (no relation to the band). So for hundreds of pages, you get the full effect of old school cut and paste layout--band logos, photos, interviews, ads, reviews, everything you'd expect. Everything is very readable, owing to the large page size.

The list of bands the publisher mentions in the book's description barely scratches the surface of the bands covered in all the zine issues. I have to stop myself from trying to describe it all. Trust me, the bands are in here, from interviews to reviews to photos to drawings to ads (the ads are almost the best part). In addition to the zine reprints, there is a bunch of other written and photographic content that is well produced and attractive. Some great photos. A lot of written commentary. Hours and hours of browsing here. The Slayer Mag zine content is DIY all the way, in the best sense.

If nothing else, this book is an incredible value. The production quality is very high, from the cover, to the editing, to the layout, to the printing--everything. This publisher is doing essential work to document some important scenes, with some real investment and quality behind it. I was very impressed by this publisher's book on Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, which is also essential, and this new Metalion book tops it.

The Hellhammer book used high gloss pages, which was perfect for all the black photos and backgrounds in that book. This book uses a mixture of a nice non-glossy paper and a glossy paper for color photos. More or less, the zine reprints are non-glossy, and there are lots of sections that are glossy. This works just right for the zine reprints, and the non-glossy paper is very nice--thick, adding to the huge size of this book. The hardcover has a very nice matte finish, but the title on the cover and spine is an inset, embossed, red foil. Very nice.

For the record, I'm not affiliated with the publisher, authors, or bands in any way. Just a fan. I listen to publisher Ian Christie's show on the satellite. This book is the real deal, independently produced, not corporate, part of the scene, with no compromise on quality. Help this publisher sell out so they can keep doing more stuff like this.

For every serious Extreme Metal Fan

I just received my copy of The Slayer Mag Diaries. This book is unbelievably huge! It's well
over 700 pages of various Death, Black, and Thrash Metal bands from the 80's - 2000, as well
as the earliest Heavy Metal bands, even I never heard of. Like the one reviewer stated, there is
no way anyone could read every word of this monster book in one sitting. You would need plenty
of time on your hands to do it. Even though I've never read Slayer Mag before, from what I've seen
so far, Metalion is a Metal God. This book is hard to put down, it's heavy, this is a Metal fan's
dream come true. All of my favorite bands are in here. Morbid Angel, Morbid, Mayhem, Immortal,
Darkthrone, U.S. Death/Black bands, Swedish, Norway, etc., they're all in this behemoth of a book.
I'm taking my time reading and looking at the rare photographs, believe me, you'll get your money's
out of this book. The best book on Extreme Metal period!

An epic monster

The first thing you should know about The Slayer Mag Diaries is that this thing is huge. We're talking about an over sized tome which includes 700+ pages of enlightening information about the bands that span the Slayer Mag's time period ('80s-'2000s). What better way to learn about the sickest bands in history than to read their own words: if you're into music you know the value of reading interviews. Yeah, you might be able to find all the same information online but how much of it is reliable? You owe it to yourself to read the artists own words and Slayer Mag was a historical masterpiece which illuminated the metal scene in this way.

You won't be able to put it down but you won't be able to read it cover to cover the first sitting either: this is one of those masterpieces you keep on your table for all your friends to check out for years to come.

I don't know about most of those purchasing the book but I'm a huge metal fan and I don't even own every edition of Slayer Mag. What you get with this book is every *single* edition, commentaries by hundreds of musicians, lots of insight past and present by John Kristiansen regarding the music at the time and dozens of other cool features. The truth is no review could ever do this book justice seeing as how to book encompasses so much history and insight: each magazine itself spans a great deal of interviews, reviews and commentaries... times that by 20 issues of Slayer, Forwards by Ian Christe, Chris Reifert, Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, Disfear, Napalm Death to name a few), Fenriz, Stephen O'Malley, Erik Danielsson and Tara G. Warrior PLUS lots commentaries by Kristiansen and edits to the Slayer Mag to make them clearer.

Edits? You're thinking that this isn't the "authentic" Slayer Mag despite Jon's name on the cover right? Wrong. Each edition of the mag is in English discussing that particular edition in depth. With the advantage of foresight Kristiansen looks back at the issue, describes it and gives his own views on the issues discussed or the bands being mentioned or the concerts being discussed. Then what follows is the actual photo copies of the Slayer Mags in Norwegian! Want insights into the "Norway Incidents?" Church burnings or even the deaths of known musicians? Jon's commentaries during the course of the book and at the foreward help illuminate these issues as well.

"Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground" by Michael Moynihan? Really crap compared to the "real" story. I can't stress that enough. Fans of the underground have been discussing crappy works of literature in the genre for years. Bazillion Points really does do an excellent job at providing the world with a fresh outlook on a history so many fans love and hold dear.

At its core Metalion is essentially ANOTHER Bazillion Points classic: if you enjoyed "Swedish Death Metal" by Ekeroth (another tome of unparalleled quality) or "Sound of the Beast" by Ian Christe then pick this up today, it tops the two which is remarkable given the fact that SDM is amazing. BP is probably the best name in metal literature for a reason: each of their books enlightens the reader about the subject matter direct from those who helped shape the history (with the exception of Ian's own writing which is more of a general history but contains many insights). This release rivals the quality I found in "Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal" by Jeff Wagner, my favorite book to date. Metalion doesn't disappoint and puts itself right up there beside the greatest music bio books ever made.

If you're a fan of metal than do yourself a favor and pick up "Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries" by Jon Kristiansen today. You don't know the full history unless you learn it from the source and there's no better source than the Slayer Mags. It is truly disappointing that at this time - with months of being released - that only myself and another reviewer has submitted reviews of this epic. Check it out today!

About the Author
Historian, novelist, and researcher in the origins of civilisation, Adel S. (Said) Bishtawi was born in Nazareth in 1945. He read English and world literature at Damascus University and took a course in linguistics at Central London Polytechnic. Bishtawi started his reporting career in the mid-1960s, cofounded in London the Asharq Al Awsat and Al-Hayat newspapers, and became central managing editor of the Emirates News Agency in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He was a production assistant for a number of TV documentaries and later produced, directed, and wrote Muslims along the Silk Road, a five-part documentary tracing the culture, heritage, and legacy of Muslim pioneers and merchants along the Silk Road. Bishtawi interviewed for TV and press world political leaders including Indian prime minister Indira Ghandi, British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, Afghan president Hafizullah Amin (shortly before his execution along with members of his family at the start of the Russian invasion of his country), Austrian chancellor Bruno Kreisky, Malaysian prime minister Mahatir Muhammad, Pakistani president Mohammad Zial-ul-Haq, Pakistani prime minister Mohammad Khan Junejo, and many others. True Screenwriting Gem -- A great book for writers and film critics alike!

Thank god someone has finally written an intelligent and helpful book on 3rd Acts!!

Having earned my MFA in Screenwriting from USC and working full time in development, I have read hundred of scripts. I can say for a fact that even the best writers can meet their downfall in the crucial third act (see Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown).

I have seen many good scripts crash and burn at page 80 - the start of the 3rd act. Usually the writer has no idea how to resolve their plotlines, and winds up taking shots in the dark. The truly amazing scripts have killer third acts - every moment of the previous scenes as been building to this. The mediocre scripts have satisfying, yet never surprising, third acts. And truly horrible scripts? Well, those writers never considered their third act while writing the first act.

Yanno walks the reader (and screenwriter) through the key types of scenes often seen and usually required in successful 3rd acts. He breaks down the mechanisms of the 3rd act, and of scripts in general, without losing the purpose of writing - to tell a story that evokes emotion.

During his numerous examples, Yanno does not discriminate with his taste in films. He discusses a wide range of movies: classics, modern releases, art house flicks, and even popcorn blockbusters. Most screenwriting books focus on the author's one or two favorite examples, Yanno uses almost 20!

Although I read The 3rd Act as a screenwriting guide, it works equally as a critical discussion of story structure - and therefore would be a tremendous value to writers and film theorists alike.

I really hope this is the first in a series by Drew Yanno. His thorough and friendly examination of other areas of screenwriting in definitely needed.

Helps with more than just the ending!

I had the privilege of taking Yanno's screenwriting classes a few years ago, and when I heard he was coming out with a new book, I knew I had to buy it right away. While there are so many screenwriting books on the market, there aren't too many that focus exclusively on the hardest part of a script: the ending. As a struggling screenwriter myself, I know how difficult it can be to write a complete script from beginning to end. I also know how difficult it can be to find the perfect ending to a script that refuses to escape from a state of unfinished purgatory. Yanno's book helps a writer escape that depressing limbo by providing helpful insight to end your movie the right way. Yanno knows that a movie's ending can make or break the story. He knows that a bad ending can make the best movies feel stale, and agrees that even the opposite is true; that a great ending can make a mediocre movie seem better than it really is. The strength in Yanno's book not only rests within the many examples of great movie endings, but also with a good amount of bad movie endings--some of those movies being movies that Yanno himself liked a lot, but agreed that the quality of the ending is the reason why the movie is seen as a failure. While the bulk of this book is focused on showing how to create a great ending, by use of these examples, Yanno has also included a list of thirty questions that I believe is the perfect blueprint for a screenplay as whole. While those thirty questions help the writer form an ending that bests fit with the script's story and characters, they also help the writer isolate the core of the script's story and characters in order to make a complete work more complete. In closing, Yanno's book is a vital (and affordable) tool that any screenwriter should possess in order to make your work truly stand out (in a good way)!

Keeping It Simple

Problem solved! Drew Yanno's book arrived just in time as I was about to give up on a spec script that I had wrestled with for the past six months.

After reading his book, my problem became quite clear. I had conflict, I had resolution, but I had neglected to answer the question raised in the first act.

I use the word "simple" purposefully as this is the style of Mr. Yanno's writing. He lays out guidlines for great endings in clear, plain English. No math degree needed, no plot points, no concentric circles, no diagrams.

The book is rife with specific examples of how great endings were fashioned in a wide range of great movies from Casablanca to Gladiator. His dissection of the third act of the latter was particularly instructive to me as it always struck me as contrived. Walking through the construction of the act, the author explained how and why it was the best way to resolve the ultimate conflict while answering the first act question.

So, if you think your script needs a geometric fix, read McKee. If you want to satisfy your audience with a great ending, read Yanno.

About the Author
Lal Krishna Advani s political journey began in 1951, when Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Jana Sangh. The party s ideologue and Chief Organiser, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, was a major influence on his ideology and idealism. Advani was elected President of the Jana Sangh in 1973 and incarcerated in jail for nineteen months during the Emergency. Advani was the Information & Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party government in 1977-1979 and has served as the President of the BJP for the longest period. He was India s Home Minister (1998-2004) and Deputy Prime Minister (2002-2004) in the Vajpayee government. A Member of Parliament since 1970, and recepient of the Award for Outstanding Parliamentarian , he is currently Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Truly inspiring!

Advaniji is a visionary leader. His autobiography helps us understanding the history of Independent India from his point of view. If you read this book along with "India after Gandhi" (which is i should say, unduly gives too much importance to Nehru and is heavily biased). Both of these books, gives a good perspective of modern day India after 1947. This is a must read for anyone who has interest in Indian politics

An overview of (modern) Indian political history

This book is an exceptional compendium of the post-1947 history of (the Republic of) India. As far as the biography genre goes, it is neither as personal as Boswell, nor as humorous as Rousseau, and lacks the romantic-artistic insights of Berlioz. But then the author is no artist; instead one learns of a true patriot's efforts to serve his country. This account is unique, not only because of its broad perspective (it belongs to an Indian politician of unimpeachable integrity, who speaks at least three languages, has worked across the breadth of a country as diverse as Europe and has been involved in the history of India since its re-creation last century) but also because it is that of a true democrat. There is nothing of the romance of Hemmingway's fighter in Spain, or of the fiery youths who courted execution by Imperial Britain: but their passion is here reflected, played out instead over five decades of nation-building.

Especially for Indians who grew up in urban India in the 1980s and 1990s, with politics dominated by the Congress (I) and public opinion moulded by English-language print-media, this autobiography is vital, for it fearlessly looks at major historical and political milestones, starting with the partition of India, the assassination of Gandhi, the 1962 "border incident", the prevalence of corrupt politicians, dynasty politics, cultural identity, the tyrannical Emergency of the 70s, the Ram temple, market reform, nuclear testing, terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir and foreign relations, with a focus on immediate neighbours: military dictatorships in Pakistan, the Kargil war, the 1971 birth of Bangladesh and increasing trade with China.

Apart from two typographical (?) errors (Herold, instead of Harold, for a PM of GB; sic. for sic) and a surprising condemnation of a learned patriot early on, the photographs could have been better arranged, and graphs and visual devices used to reinforce historical timeline, especially given that the memoirs of contemporary politicians are often regarded as text-books.

I recommend this work to any student of Indian politics, economics or society, to everyone who loves India, and to any one who despises her; but mostly to those Indians who might have given up hope for their country.

A Bold Effort

Advani has done the country an enormous service in setting a trend of writing political memoirs. I hope other political leaders do it as honestly (some call it boldly) as he has done. Sure, there was a little touch of presenting himself as good but that is only natural in any autobiography.

What is commendable is that he did not hesitate from touching upon the controversial subjects esp. when his political career is still active.
The book also takes us through a wonderful journey of a political activist sticking to his convictions despite victories, defeats and opportunities. His candid assessment of loss of morals within his own party is truly admirable. I am not a person who reads books. This is my first book of over 300 pages and I've read it in less than four days. Such a gripping story it was!

India is indebted to a politician like him who single-handedly responsible for taking it from a democratic monarchy to a bipolar democracy. We hope he will succeed in making this country a strong, secure, and a morally correct model for the world.

This book is a very nice presentation of basic urban material. Brueckner has a great talent for taking complex ideas and models and putting them in readily accessible frameworks that capture the key points. Moreover he uses simple examples to illustrate the issues. The material should be accessible to advanced undergraduates and will provide insights for graduate students as well.

Jan Brueckner's lucid Lectures on Urban Economics is a rigorous, but non-technical, analysis of the major topics in the field. Excellent

Jan Brueckner's LECTURES ON URBAN ECONOMICS is an excellent introduction to the subject for anyone with a background in intermediate microeconomics. As Vernon Henderson (back cover endorsement) points out, Brueckner "... has a great talent for taking complex ideas and models an putting them in readily accessible frameworks that capture the key points."
The book contains chapters on urban spatial structure (4), transportation, housing (2), local public goods, pollution, crime, and urban quality of life measurement. The author admits that "the book contains very little purely descriptive or factual material of the kind usually found in textbooks." That said, it seems very up-to-date and even provides a basic analysis of the housing market implosion of recent years.
To sum up, this is a very thoughtfully organized and clearly written introduction to the key elements of urban economic theory.

This book offers a good introduction to urban economics. There is practically no math, so the only prerequisute for reading the text will be knowledge of intermediate microeconomics, exactly as other readers have suggested.
