About the Author
Bob Flaws is the most prolific writer on Chinese medicine in the English language. He is author, translator, or editor of over 80 books on Chinese medicine and scores of articles published in both professional journals and the popular press. Among his other credits, Bob is a past president and lifetime fellow of the Acupuncture Association of Colorado, a fellow and director of the National Academy of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine as well as a past editor of that association's quarterly journal, a founder of the Council of Oriental Medical Publishers, and the founder of Blue Poppy Enterprises. Bob is also the co-author and co-director of an NIH-funded research project working with AIDS-related peripheral neuropathy.

Easy to follow instructions

The author divides his wines into 11 categories, among them wines for strengthening the sinews and bones, wines for fortifying the spleen and harmonizing the stomach, gynecological wines, wines for dispelling wind, etc. For each of these categories he gives dozens of recipes with exact amounts of herbs and alcohol to be used. For each recipe, he also specifies the diseases or ailments the wine can cure, how the wine is to be prepared, when and how often the medicine is to be administered, and whether there are contraindications.
Almost all ingredients have to be purchased in an Asian store, or through a variety of specialty internet stores whose addresses the author provides. To help the reader find the correct ingredients, each herb is listed by its Chinese and its scientific (Latin) name.
The book is very well organized, easy to understand, thanks to the introduction that explains Chinese herbal medicine, and the recipe instructions are easy to follow. No special equipment is required

Should we use the alcohol tincture form of Chinese herbs? Bob Flaws, a leading educator in traditional Chinese herbalism has reviewed the use of alcohol preparations of Chinese herbs from classic texts as well as modern medical usage. Recipes and dosages given in detail. Readers will need a basic knowledge of the terminology and concepts of Chinese medicine. To answer the question at the top, alcoholic preparations of Chinese herbs are usually taken in much greater volume than tinctures are in Western herbalism, and only when the medicinal effects of the alcohol -- warming and stimulating -- are also sought.
